And it's not just the money you save, it's being able to look at it and say,"Look at that sexy setup. I made that sexy setup. What a sexy setup. mmmm."
Too true

Like $200 or so. I spent $300 for a new 125gal stand. Not including the canopy.

Around here, the stand (not including canopy) will cost you more than the tank itself. And I'm talking about a drilled, with overflows, reef ready tank. And the stand isn't even built all that well. Not like we DIY'ers build stands.

I think the last time I looked at a stand/canopy combo for a 125g tank, it was running around $600-650. That was for a pretty nice one though. They just don't offer them for sale very much around here.

Much easier, cheaper, and MUCH more satisfying building your own stand, IMO.

my brother is currently building me a stand for my 180,cost of materials so far 89 dollars(8-4x4's 8feet long, box of lag bolts,3-2x4's 8 feet long and 1-sheet of half inch ply wood)

You might end up needing a second sheet of plywood....I did for my 125.
Be sure to post pics once your stand is done! :headbang2

It's nice to know how much $$$ I saved! Let alone that I didn't have any more money to spend than the $140 :)

Building your stand saved you money, but just like everyone else said, you ended up with a much higher quality product that you could be proud of! Looks great BTW.

Thanks for the commnet :headbang2
You're right....its cool I saved money, but the sturdiness/quality is most important!
I don't build stuff that often...so I have to say, I am a kinda proud when I get to show the stand/canopy to somebody tell them that I built it :grinno:

I've never seen a store bought stand that I would consider "good". I don't really trust sawdust and glue to hold all the weight up :)

agreed. the only store bought stands I will buy are steel ones that the LFS's in my area carry that are locally made.

eg. my 150 sits on one made with 1.5" steel tubing. you could park a car on it.

but I am not a fan of the prefab wooden ones from the LFS. they are held together with wood staples and glue..
