Ok, so I decided i needed a "night light" for my tank to see if my aro will stop causing tidal waves at night. I was about to buy a LED light strip online when I realized i could use some LED christmas lights. i didnt want to mess with my expensive T5HO fixture, so i used a spare light to make a LED hood. so here's what i did:

- get a spare cheapo aquarium light hood and gut it completely, all you need is the shell. the one is used is a 36" hood

- screw in a piece of wood on the inside of the hood. i used a 2x2 strip. this is where you will attach the LEDs

- paint the inside of the hood white. i did this to help reflect as much light as possible

- attach the LEDs using coaxial staples. I used a 60 LED christmas light string. i only had a few LEDs left over after attaching them side-by-side

thats it! i dont have any installed pics as i painted the outside of the hood black and its drying right now. im using it on my 210g 7x2x2. it only provided a little bit of light in the middle but thats what i wanted. i just wanted a night light to create a little bit of light in the tank so my aro doesnt freak out.

so, what do you guys think? :)

Nice looking light. I can't wait to see pictures of it in action.

Nice to see it was designed by Carona! LOL

Definitely going to need pics of this in action and a report on whether it has the desired effect. If so I'll have to do one to stop my aro from hitting the lids at night.

ill post pics later tonight after it dries and gets dark. its not blinding light, but its definitely good enough for a night light IMO. besides, for what it costs to make, you cant go wrong :)
