i haven't been able to find any information about wiether or not trapping minnows is legal in california. i've got a minnow trap i threw together that i want to try out when i go camping this weekend but i'd really rather not get arrested. i do have a valid california fishing liscense that i know allows me to catch a whole lot of herps but i don't know about fish/inverts. can anybody help me out?

Nope. But if ur on a boat or want to go for a little walk..... kinda hide the line in a hard to get to place. If ur talking about Parks that a totaly no no.. Feather River? Or headed out of town?

When i was at a lake last year we where fishing in a cove and found 3 traps... my lure got stuck on something and i thought it was a catfish.... :*( turned out being a few shade in a trap. Look around the cove and saw something on a tree, went over and saw 3 lines pulled each up and looked to see what they had.... One had a Bullhead in it.. i let it go :) and then tossed them back lol... dont know why i did that. But i put them closer to the shoreline... lol

i'm going to Salano park, on Putah creek. guess if it's illegal i'm going to have to stick to a net.

Putah creek?! lmao. Isn't putah(sp) B!TCH in spanish?! lol.

Wait, i thought netting just as bad? That fine is even more last time i had a ran in with Fish in game.

wahoo, hate to be contradictory but i just got ahold of the 2007-2008 freshwater fishing regulations and dip nets and traps are allowed for collecting bait fish and crawfish, no limits on catch only that the dip nets cannot exceed 6 feet in greatest dimension(not including handle) and traps can't exceed 3 feet in greatest dimension.

Be warned that traps are illegal in most or all freshwater in CA without a scientific collecting permit, and only legal in saltwater for a short list of critters including staghorn sculpin ("bullheads"), topsmelt, jacksmelt, herring, and shrimp (check the marine regs booklet for the exact list)...but as long as you throw other stuff back they're still legal. Try setting just before the peak flood so they fish during the slack tide, that gives you a couple of hours where you don't have to traverse mudflats or such to get to them, and a lot of neat things seem to come in close to the shore on the high tide...

cheers,
Dave
