I know water changes are the most effective way of reducing nitrates and that plants will reduce nitrates as well. Is there anything else that is effective in reducing nitrates, thats also practical? Ive seen some chemicals that supposedly eliminate nitrates but I think they just temporarily convert them into something else.
Any tips out there?

I personally don't care for adding chemicals. Plants do wonders. There is no sustitution for water changes.

Plants use and nitrites as food, try adding some plants, and fluval has a product called clearmax that I use in my filters to reduce phosphates, nitrites and nitrates.

Plants and denitrification coils work nicely.

water changes most cost effective way... heavily planted tanks will work too but you need alot of plants
