i added bags of gravel, thats all the gravel i have at the moment.
also just built the separator thing,
before the media would do what it wanted, like in first pic.
now it stays in place.i think it will help alot.

You still have alot of bypass. You should try and bunch up all the sponges into one with a media bag or something so is one solid mass that fits snug on all the sides.

You could also get a rubbermaid tub(or anything to fit the barrel and pump in) and put the barrel into the tub. Adding just enough water to cover both the pumps and raise the bucket out of the water. Make all the media snug around the outside so there is absolutely no bypass. You have it setup so the water just runs right beside all the media. You want it to go threw the media. Its kinda like throwing a hotdog down a hallway right now:ROFL:

Did you look into the mattress pads, it would be great for mechanical filtration... Just cut a few round species about 1'' bigger than the barrel itself and stack them at the very top.

Ill try and think of ways to filter it the next time i go fishing:headbang2

that mattress pad sounds like a good idea for him, i would also think that some more gravel would work well like in a bag big enough to touch every part of the inside of the barrel

Alright, since you have a baseline (a years worth of previous history on this filter) you'll be able to see quickly how the changes effected it.

I trust the discolored material is the old stuff used to 'seed' the new filter.

Mattress foam padding can channel water if you lay it flat, make it dish shaped so the weight of the water pushes the water thru it. It will get a little disgusting around the edges that are out of the water from water creep, but no harm.

Aeration would help your system (filter), but the way you have it set up I'm afraid it will condense under your top filter material to one big bubble and 'burp' moving the material to one side and screwing up everything. Will work ok if you put egg crate (plastic) on top to hold it flat.

How's the inline filter holding up (have you tested the water quality coming out verses going in)?

Did you ignore my question about the 'other ' filter??:ROFL:

Keep up the good work, it gives encouragement to others to know they can try too, you've come a long way (still don't know why DGF stays, she must like being ignored :D).

If Home Depot and Lowes carried fish, all the LFS's would go out of business! :nilly:

Looking forward to your posts,

Dr Joe

I dont think the bed mattress foam/sponge is such a good idea unless you guys have different foam over there. Bed mattress is closed cell struture so most of the water will run off or overflow your bucket unless it is under pressure. If you do need to use foam/sponge try some aquaculture places or specialised rubber places and ask for open cell. Picture the Aquaclear HangOn filter media to see the cell structure difference. They manufacture "Fish Foam" by detonating a small charge under vacume pressure Im told.

Give it a try if youve already got the stuff - best way to learn sometimes.
