Why not to use sand

Using sand for over a year, never stirred it up, and no problems.
Sounds like this guy things just by having sand your tank is automatically doomed at one point or another... I avoid mixing my sand because of all the dust that was left when I put it in the tank. I might start doing better gravel vacs though.
Or in this case, a sand vac.

So basically if you do decide to keep sand you just need to make sure to stir it up, in particular areas that might be trapped behind or under decorations.

Is that right?

Lets face it, there will always be people who keep sand rather than gravel (myself included) so I would rather find a solution to this possible scenario.

I don't think you need to stir the sand even...
As long as you have decent water movement everything should be O.K.

Not sure if this has been mentioned yet but the solution to all your sand trapping stuff problems is = Malaysian Trumpet Snails, they burrow into the sand and move it. They come out at night and burrow in the day.

^ between my oscars, my jd's, and changing the water once a week i do think my sand see's its fair share of movement!

Not to stir-up the poop hive brewing here, but what about ammonia? I would think in freshwater that would be a concern, and more likely than hydrogen sulfide, and far more likely than sulfuric acid.
I like the post of Davey_8313 provided by BDerick67, sounds like it could be referenced.
Sounds like a good experiment though.. different fish = different diets = different pH+ different poop + different microbes = ..........
Anybody got a spectrometer?

Ammonia doesn't make sense... It would be converted rather quickly into nitrite. Unless you took a bunch of fish poop and buried at the bottom of the sand...

Those snails mentioned above, would they not be a good snack for lets say, an Oscar?
