Get better Cichlid Fiend!
Went out last night to a pond by my home and right off the bat landed a 13 incher. he fought like crazy :nilly:. After that it was pretty sloow until about 8:40 i had what i think was a small crappie get off my hook. At about 9:00 i was trolling and felt a tug on my line i set the hook. I had a lot of line out so i fought the poor fish for a long ways. He put up barely any fight so i concluded that it was a crappie when i finally bought him to the shore i saw that it was no crappie. I am not sure what it is but i know it is a shoaling fish because when i picked him out of the water about 4 dark fish swam around my hand. Can you identify it? i posted pics below.
If i hadnt caught any more fish it would have been Ok but a half an hour later i was trolling on another part of the pond when i felt a massive tug. I set the hook but realized it was just a snag (i am positive it was a snag) I walked back to it when all of a sudden my rod wipped into a C shape. :WHOA: The drag screamed and i saw my line cutting through the water it was going up, to jump! this was no blugeill or small bass, this was a [V]onster!
When it jumped i saw how big it was, this thing was a GIANT! The rod was bent when i heard a car behind me out of the corner of my eye i saw it was the campus police i kept fighting the fish but was thinking why on earth he was here! The pond was fine to fish at and i couldnt imagine what was wrong. He got out of his car and walked towards me. i was about to tell him that he could do whatever he wanted... after i brought the fish in! I landed the fish and turned around He had his camera phone and was smiling broadly he took a picture of me with my camera and asked if he could show the pictures to his friends. I measured the fish. as long as it was over 17 inches i would be happy. I scanned the numbers... 15... 16.... 17.... more to go....18... 18 and a half..... 19" It was 19 inches long the biggest largemouth i had ever caught! I weighed it, 1 pound, 2 pounds 3 pounds 3.34 pounds!!!!
I left after releasing him safely. He is still alive in there, know i just need to catch him on a fly rod!!!:headbang2

haha nice fish! Hope there are many more to come for you, And yes that is probably some species of shad or herring don't worry what species theyre all bait in my eyes :D

Thanks! Wow a shad really? i have used them for bait but never thought i would hook one lol

Nice work that's a real nice bass! One thing though, when you hold them by just the lip (first picture,) let the fish hang vertically or support its body with your other hand. Tilting a fish horizontally by just the jaw can cause a lot of damage, it can even break the jaws of bigger bass!

I do a lot of fly fishing for bass, I'll post some pictures of flies I developed for them in a bit ;)

Anyone ever fish for american shad?

You wont find these patterns in any store, but you may be able to find something similar online or in fly shops around your area. I would have no problem sharing a few with you, but I don't think you live anywhere near Denver lol.

The top two are basically the fly rod equivalent of a jig n pig, one of the most popular and effective bass lures of all time. Fish usually hit it on the drop, or while its sitting motionless on the bottom. You can also hop them along or drag them across the bottom. The bottom fly is a crawdad imitation that I developed after a lot of trial and error. I fish it pretty much the same way as the others.

Two other flies you should carry are woolly buggers (sz.8-2, in black, olive, brown, and white) and clouser minnows (sz.10-1/0, in chartreuse and white, white, and black.) Other sizes and colors are useful too, but those are the ones I use most often. Any retrieve from hopping them along the bottom to burning them in just under the surface could work for these two flies, so experiment! You should be able to find buggers and clouser minnows at most fly shops.

There isn't a ton of info on fly fishing for bass, so feel free to ask any questions you have! With practice you'll end up with fish like these!

Cichlid fiend: I just read my first sentence and it can be taken very badly! I meant i hope your finger heals up after getting the trailer hook in it i am sorry if you took this the wrong way!
Fisher, Those look really good i would pay postage and could part with a few bucks... Very nice bass! I have two wooly buggers but they are smallish. I will try to pick up some clouser minnows should i add some weight to the buggers they sink real slow i have only caught bluegill with them. Also thinks for the tip on holding them vertically, i will from now on.
Caught three fish yesterday the biggest was 12 inches one was a bluegill
