Not set up yet, but we're getting close. Will definitely post pics when the build is complete.

ugh the suspense, why cant you be like everyone else and give us some teaser pics? lol ill look foward to seeing what you have been working on, and i couldnt find much of anything on the inline filters you mentioned. i could find the smaller rtl-25 but not the 100. do you guys use pressure gauges to see when they are dirty?

My flow will slow down before I see a pressure rise. I guess that is due to using a pump that is 1/8th the power the filter was designed for. Other than the pressure gauge everything works perfect using this pool/hot tub filter with a pump much smaller than what this filter was designed for. The micron level of filtration DE provides produces very large quantities of perfectly clear water!

I looked at this heater when I was researching ways to heat my tank.

You can get the 1.5KW heater for under $300. I have heard they are reliable; a few public aquariums use Coates heaters for their large display tanks. They make heaters up to 300KW! I would hate to see the bill after running one of those.

In regards to pumps, I believe most spa pumps are pressure rated (since they have to push water through spa jets) which means they would be energy hogs. They might be ok if you had to pump water from a basement, but more often than not the pumps used on hot tubs will not be efficient on a standard sump under stand setup.

The exception would be the Laing Circulation pump which I have heard is the same as the Velocity/Poseidon series pumps which were popular for how quiet they ran and their low wattage draw.

A co-worker just bought a house that has a Spa that he does not want, so I may go check it out and scavenge some spare parts off of it (hoping the heater is the Coates 1.5KW).

New here but this is what I came up with awhile back. I sell spa's and worked on them for quite a few years. So I have access to parts and psc and really good prices.

Parts; 1 110v laing circ pump like mentioned above, various pvc fittings one 50 stft filter.

Sorry need to finish. Anyway here is the filter which is hidden behind the 3d background. You can still do this system with a spa canister under the tank like a hayward or starite type filter. Most would be better off price wise with a FX5 but still the applications for a closed loop type system like this works great for polishing or biological. I run mine 24/7 and can change the filter out in a matter of seconds.

Here is a picture of the tank with the filter set up behind the backgroundI am also running a aquatop CF400 canister filter as well.

Very clever way to use a filter cartridge for polishing water. My spa filters work extremely well for mechanical filtration removing feces and debris off the floor of my tank. Run via a Hammerhead pump (5500 gph at 4' head), the filter cartridges get very filthy and disgusting... evidence that they are doing a really good job :)
