+1I think that 110% of their dark sweet looking pattern is due to dark tanks and lighting.
The thing is though, there's 3500 lumens of light, plus the flash, in this tank and all of this is over white sand. When I had him over black sand and later a bare black bottom his color was still chrome. Now in the black water setup he is dark grey and dull. Before he had the yellow fins like most other members GATF but now they are dark brown with black rays. I've never seen another quite like this. Not to take anything away from this gorgeous fish, but... My 3 gatf I had all looked like this once they got to 7". They were in a black tank as well. I think that 110% of their dark sweet looking pattern is due to dark tanks and lighting. I had them in with some LEDs and they were great colors, just had a camera phone so pics are meh of mine. I'll see if I can dig one up. The fish washed out when over light substrate.

I see. With mine I had they were silver to start on bare bottom. Then I added a black background. Then added black sand. They darkened up. As they grew I added some wood to the tank. The tank had a 4' 6500k led light bar on it for the most part I would add and remove a 2' 6500k led bar here and there. They got really dark and had brown/gold in their fins once they got to 7"+. When they were smaller they were very clear finned and were silver. I am looking into my old threads to see if I ended up with a usable picture of them. I know one of them is now about 9" and is in a small ambient lit tank and it is crime with clear fins...been thinking real real hard about picking it up again. The other we would have to wait for the new owner to chime in. It could just be due to the tannens in the water affecting their colors and patterns as they try to "blend".The thing is though, there's 3500 lumens of light, plus the flash, in this tank and all of this is over white sand. Douglas Dann, the guy who caught the black ones, talked to me at length about this. He feels that the black GATF are the same thing as a regular one that just happens to live in a tannins soaked river. He stated that the color of the fish is directly related to the "blackness" of the water; white water fish are chrome and the fish from what he calls the Black River are black as its the most intense black water environment around. Fish from intermediate waters will have varying colors based on the amount of tannins in the water.
This is what prompted me to go with a black water setup. The fish is now getting darker through the continued development of melanophores in his skin. I'll take a picture tomorrow to illustrate how he has continued to get darker over the past two months.
I really wish there was another mfk'r who could put eyes on this fish in person to give an opinion. :/
The day the mailman brought him to me from Aquascape, 18 April 2012. He's 2.5 inches in this pic.
