I found this little texas cichlid at the lfs and bought it with the hopes of mating it with my large texas. Too my surprise, within days my 5-6 inch flowerhorn has began apparent courtship displays. The two are constantly together. I have a few questions, first about their sexes. Secondly, would this pair be fertile? Also, are my two texas cichlids even the same species? Any suggestions or answers are appreciated, as I have not been able to locate anyone with more knowledge about these kinds of fish than the users of MFK. Thanks and here are some photos...

My larger Texas

Here is my FH. Male or Female?

Here is another one of my FH with his new friend a 4-5 inch texas (blue or green?)

And finally, look at my FH's vent. Does this mean male or female? It just started this upon liplocking and excavating a corner of the tank with the smaller texas.

Thanks for everyones help.

Clint

UPDATE: My Flowerhorn is a female, I just found eggs inside a pot "she" is guarding. The little texas is helping out. The two have mated. More than half the eggs are brown. The others are white. Brown means fertilized right? I'm excited about this. Has anyone heard of a flowerhorn and texas actually reproducing?

There are a lot of flowerhorn varients out there that are full of Texas blood ;) So breeding them should be very easy.

And yes, your tex is a male. The flowerhorn is very pretty, btw :)

It's day 3 and I've got wrigglers. It looks like the little pot they are in is vibrating. This would be my first spawn, so I am a little nervous. Does anyone have any suggestions as to when I should move my fish from the main tank to the brood tank? I am thinking after the yolks are absorbed... right when they become free swimmers. And should I move just the mom or both?

yes that FH is clearly the female... you can tell by the size of her breeding tube sticking out. A males tube is like a little ball point pen tip as a females looks like a crayon lol FH is 100% female and looks nice
