I will be building a pond this spring...probably around 8'x4'x3'deep. It will be an above ground pond and it will definetly have my red ear in it. What I want to know is should I stick with Koi and goldfish or is there some cool stuff I can put that will last through our mild winters. It never snows...dips to the high 20's at night every now and then with maybe a rare night its lower than that. I am in Lafayette wich is about 2hrs west of new orleans. I want some big cichlids...P bass..something interesting from the top and wont eat my turtle.

I'd be more worried about your turtle taking chunks out of any fish...RES will eat or try to eat most anything....

Maybe build a seperate area in the same system for the turtle?

Well I know he can...but he was raised in a pond with koi and goldfish and never fooled with them...I also never fed him live food....if that even matters lol. I have had him since he was the size of a quarter now he is 6-7". I dont want top dollar fish incase he does mess with them...just something different and cool looking from the top.

maybe make it a natural setup like some bass and bluegill or some sunfish. i don't know just some thoughts.

I thought about some locle stuff too...but want a lil more color. I know P bass are not from here but they live in FL along with oscars...didnt know if those would make it over here.

pBass won't make it thru the cold temps that's why they're only in the far S.Fla.

Not much available with color from the top except albino cats and you may not see them often.

Gfish and koi are a nice choice, alot of different color combos and you can tell the difference between fish if you want to name them.

Locals only show color when they flash :(.

Kinda what I was thinking...I dont dislike koi...I have just had them before and wanted to look at something different. I will probably just stick to them...

dont get fooled by the not so cold nights. unless you have some plan for heating, most fish (other than koi and golds) will die on a good cold front. They'll either be frozen and on the bottom or just die and float.

1 thing we def found is ghost/grass shrimp will reproduce like crazy during this time.

cheapest test would prob be some local fish but they don't have much color out side of green and silver lol

Find a gold flowerhorn or pink convicts. I had an OB african actually survive last yr.

Above ground will get down to the same temperature as your air so... coldwater only.

Unless heated Koi,goldfish and native are your best bet.
