For those of you who may have missed this in the Arowana forum, I wanted to share a lesson learned the hard way this week. I Suddenly became deathly ill, was taken to the hospital and was kept in the hospital for a few days in icu-all thanks to a rare tropical fish disease called Edwardsiella Tarda

This subject is really hard to find info on, it's not well known. I had fresh, minor cuts on one finger from working on fencing then cleaned my tank with the fresh cut (it was tiny) It dropped me very fast, I was out of it, high fever, a friend found me and took me to the ER. I was in septic shock, fully in my lymph and bloodstream.

It is rare outside the tropics, very few known human cases, one an infant in Belgium. They tested one known source, Pan Oceanic Aquarium in Hayward, CA, a fish supplier.

Some of the fish it comes from are Angelfish, Black Skirted Tetra, Blue Gourami (OK, at this point I'm 3 for 3!)also Chinook Salmon. There are others, but it gets into the water, then into the GI tract of all fish in the water and is passed from supplier to lfs to our home Aquariums.

Honestly, my Dr. said I was really lucky to make it. My blood vessels were all inflamed and swollen, it was really incredibly painful and they couldn't give me pain meds because my BP was so low. IT SUCKED and STILL DOES!!!!

I'm on strong antibiotics, after IV antibiotics, and still feel like caca. I called around and finally found armpit length cattle/horse vet plastic gloves and ordered them thru my vet. I highly suggest that everyone heed this warning, especially if you have children.

Lesson learned the hard way, as usual, never saw it coming!!!!!
Peace out-Mei

Wow.. That sucks.

Interesting to know for all of those who work in tanks daily.

I hope issues like this don't become widespread in the hobby.

Yeah, it is scary, it's so easy for any fish to pick up, it would be especially scary to test all of our tanks, wish I lived near a University! I have a weakened heart, which made me a bit more at risk than the average, but kids, etc., it's scary. There's always the factor of the "unseen" too, but it sounds likes every fish could theoretically have it.

I have worked in my tank for years, I'm sure I've had cuts, cat scratches, etc, I coincidentally just got my new Fluval 405 but it sure makes me wonder..I have always been really good about washing up afterwards. Edwardsiella Tarda usually shows up in the GI tract, fishy poo hands not getting clean enough, then getting into the mouth, even that makes more sense. This was really weird. I was FINE, 2 hours later I was down and out. I couldn't even crawl. It could have been in my system longer, I don't know. I'm not a Dr., and don't want to see one again!!!! (No offense to any Dr.'s on here)

If anyone is a Doc, or has more info on this, please share!!!

Stay Healthy!!!!

I'm hoping with the new filter, a good water change in a few days (don't want to kill all the good bacteria) I'll have a much cleaner tank. I was already a fanatic about my tank being clean. Everything that kills this seems to kills fish too.........

Anyway, thanks you guys, I'll be fine!:eek::eek:

Hope you feel better, good info to know!

Pan Oceanic Aquarium in Hayward, CA, a fish supplier.

Eek! This place is in my area and probably infected the area fish as well...
