IMO, a scenery background never looks right, no matter how well it is put on...but if by scenery background you meant diy freaking awesome midnight style 3d background, then I change my vote from black to that one...

might do it one day tho. :)
and scenery is just plain lfs stuff.

The problem I have with black backgrounds and the main reason that most comercial display tanks use blue is that a large number of fish have black bands or markings and can blend into the background. The blue provides a good contrast with less of a chance of clashing with the fish.
