One of the largest smooth butterfly rays we've had in our facility gave birth overnight to 4 pups (so far). I'm not down there right now (out of town this week), but my staff called to share the great news early this morning!!!

These are pics of her taken three days ago (Just before I left town). I also have video I'll try to load showing the pup movement on her back. She's roughly 24" tip to tip right now to give you an idea of size. She's sitting in a Q tank with a pair of female yellow rays.

Cool!

Which is your favorite- freshwater or saltwater rays?

Full grown can be up to 3 or 4 feet from what I've read. This one is about 2 feet.

I like both fresh and marine rays. Freshwater Amazon rays hold a close place to my heart just b/c I've spent so many years with them, and I've been lucky enough to help out with a lot of the 'cutting edge' knowledge as we learned it.

Marine rays are cool just to to size of most. I'm a fan of monster sized fish. Eagle rays (like cownose) are cool b/c of the free swimming behaviors vs rays that just sit on the bottom.

I'm not back to Miami until Sunday about 4AM, and then it's straight to work. Unless someone emails me some pics from there, it'll be Monday before I can post some.

Congrats!
