Well, this was my first attempt at a DIY and decided to make a moonlight for my 55g.
The one problem with my DIY light is that only incandescent rope lights were available, I'll have to buy led rope lights soon since the incandescents get pretty warm. Another problem is that it does crowd the top of the tank.

Materials:
-Standard house gutter ($5)
-2 gutter end caps ($3 each)
-ropelight ($15)
-super glue

Tools:
-saw
-drill w/ bore bit

1) Cut gutter to the length of your tank.
2) Attach end caps on both ends.
3) Super glue the rope light clips to the inside of the gutter.
4) Bore a hole in the back the size of the connector from the rope light to the power cord.

The following pictures are a progression of the build, simple and easy.

Very nice idea. Gutter works as reflector also.

How does it look in the dark???

it looks pretty good, the incandescents aren't as brights as the led will be when i finally order the led rope light. the battery charger for my camera is missing so i'm taking pics with my cell and i couldn't get a picture of it in the dark, but it does look good.

May use your idea with cold cathode lights on my 20g that I am setting up. Gutter looks like it will fit in the hood I am building for it right nicely.

another way to reflect more light downward would be to glue mirrored tiles to the inside of the gutter. just a thought if the current light output isn't enough light for anyone.

I also plan on spray painting the outside black to match the tank trim and fluorescent light fixture

yea, i've looked into chrome spray paint for restoring things and can be pretty pricey, a little out of my price range, but it would look good, haha

Krylon makes chrome spray paint. can get it at wal-mart last time I looked.

not a hijack bt i was about to do one of these as well but my idea seems so much easier then all the ones ive seen.

i was going to use 2 12V Blue Flexible Waterproof SMD LED Light Strip from ebay. u can get two for 8 usd with free shipping.

i was going to use a solar panel and put it on my window seal. put the leads to a small 12v battery and from the battery go to a switch then to the LED lights that i would stick on the bottom of the day lights.

im doing it that way just because i have all the stuffin my closet. but u can do it with just the battery and lights if u wanted to. so with that i was wondering if anyone has used thoughs lights.... or
