We've kept tropical fish for many years and about 5 years ago we got our first big tank, as a small community setup was at bursting point. The fish were moved into there new home and we made a few additions, over the years we kept gourmai schools, silver dollars and rainbows, as some died and were replaced them with other things. Towards the end of cycle we decided to try something bigger and thought about a giant gourami.
After some basic internet reading which went along the lines of 'they get large' I stumbled across a site call MFK, annoyed that I couldn't used the search facility without joining I joined and found some very useful info on the species and after hunting around we finally found a small one for sale.
That was three years ago and the rest I suppose is history. George as he became known was happily living in peace after the rest of the tank slowly died out(some at his hands) and he grew nicely over this time. The plan was always the same, I don't buy fish with a view to moving them on they are here for life and we have been trying to extend our property which would house him in a much much larger tank, a dream that was looking more and more likely as work is picking up and this in now planned for the spring.
Anyway enough of the story, came home today and found him dead, it looks like he's somehow jumped against the hood and knocked himself out again the beams that runs through the middle, the only mark on him is a tiny line across his jaw.
I'm beyond gutted, the tank sits in the living room and the fish had become part of the family, now there just sits an empty tank and to be honest at the moment I'm thinking the time may have come to wind down the tanks and sell up, this may not be the case but at the moment I'm so fed up I just don't know what to do.
Some pictures:
A fellow member took this about a month before we purchased him at an LFS, we at the time were and I still am convinced this is the same fish:
A couple of weeks after he'd settled in:
Taken last night, the last picture of him alive:
And the finally picture, the end
Thanks for reading, RIP George.
