I got home last night to find my Jardini with one of his gills ripped 3/4 off. It is the soft tissue attached to the gill plate, it's been ripped from the top 3/4 down and is flapping around as he swims. He is swimming, feeding and acting normal.

Now, how to fix him....I know it should grow back as it looks like the MJ gave him gill curl surgery, and is a farily clean cut. But im not sure how it will heal with the remaining 1/4 even if I manage to cut the flap off.

What is the beast thing to do, leave it be and see what happens? Try to get him out and cut the flap off? Try to cut the remaining 1/4 off? I don't have clove oil, so I was thinking of netting him out into a bucket, calming him down for a while with the lights off, then gently cut it off while he's sitting still. I think he would thrust around too much if I tried to grab him.

The tank already has a fair bit of salt in there as thats how I like to keep it.

Thanks in advance.

If the soft tissue of the gill was ripped and still some left, It should grow back with clean water and since your already have salt, so just do waterchange and let it grow back itself. A picture would help. ;)

Thanks Hao.

Yeah, he still has some left...the bit I want to get rid of, the flappy bit.

Im just worried that it will still be there when the rest grows back and it will look funny, plus im not sure how it will grow and look like with 1/4 of the gill remaining. Will it just align back up to the existing tissue, and the extended flappy bit, will that die off and fall off like a scab, or will it remain? Maybe it might be an eyesore and annoying for one of the other tank mates and they might remove it for him...

I will get some pics tonight and post them tomorrow when im at work. (My dog ate my internet cable)

Thanks

The leftover piece will probably drop off by itself. Unless you wanna cut it off, just keep the water clean so it doesn't get infected. What is the temp?

OK, good.

26 degrees celcius at the moment, I bumped it up to 28 last night.

Oh, btw. It was the Jardini that started it. I saw him last night pissing off the Jack, the Jack was standing over him, pushing him back with his open mouth. I think they hate each other, I may need to rehome the Jar once he heals. His teeth are growing really big lately, hopefully he doesn't do anymore damage.

Thanks
