Okay, so my friend just got a HD video camera as a birthday gift to himself. We go up to the springs around here a lot and Have been wanting to get an underwater case for our still cameras but the cost up to $1200 that we dont have so for his birthday I decided to go ahead and make him an underwater case for the video camera. Here are the results:

It ended up costing about $50 and it seems to work well so far. I am taking it to the pool tomorrow to test it further. The only problem that I have run into is the screw on lid is sometimes very difficult to loosen and I have been needing to re-wrap it in threading tape nearly every time I use it. Any suggestions on this? Thanks.

Looks good. You might be able to fasten/glue a gasket or an o-ring to the bottom of the screw in pipe cap. If the bottom of the cap bottoms out on lip of the flange the gasket/o-ring should keep the water out.

3 questions:

What is the clear window made out of?

How is it fastened?

How do you operate the camera once it's inside?

Okay, thanks. I will look into a gasket.

The window is made from lexan safety glass (basically string Plexiglas) and it is fastens by being sandwiched between two pieces of PVC and cemented in place. Then I used Silicone around the edges to ensure that it it water tight. Unfortunately the camera cannot be operated while it is in the case but you can simply turn it on and stick it in there and then take it down, do your shooting and edit it later. I am going to secure the camera in the case with foam so that IF any water leaks in, it is absorbed and the camera will be suspended in the middle of the canister making it the last place the water would reach.

Is there any way to get a handheld remote for the camera that you could feed through a hole in the casing, and then waterproof the hole? That would allow you to turn it on and off while under water.
