This is not a question about what you believe, it is a question about experience. Please only vote if you are running/have run a single canister as only means of filtration on a 200+ gal tank.

Howdy,

As some may have read HERE, I am running an Eheim 2080 on a 220 gal and am not happy with its mechanical filtration. I have floaties in my tank that I cannot get rid of. Biofiltration and circulation are perfect, but I expect no less.

To also say this up front:
  • I expect cleaning intervals of a canister filter to be no shorter than half a year. If the filter clogs up before that, it is too small and underpowered.
  • That canister is the only filter on my tank. I do not want any additional pumps or filters in my aquarium. One single filter has to be able to do it.
Is anyone running a single canister on their 220+ gal tank(s) with 100 % satisfaction? I can currently think of four canisters that would be rated for that volume, as indicated in the poll.

Please vote and describe your set-up in a reply.

Thanks,
HarleyK

ps
This is a public poll.

I use a canister filter on my 375. However it is a pressurized pond canister filter and you have to use a seperate pump with it. It is a fishmate 2000. I have about 1000 gph going through it. It has a uv light in it and has bio media as well. There is no room to add or swap media. It comes with a coarse and fine sponge and a basket of lavarock for bio. I added seachem matrix to the lavarock to help. I have had this filter running for 3 years and am very pleased. I take it apart to clean it once a year. It has a back flush to it to clean with water changes. My ammonia and nitrites are always zero and I have a large bio load. I have 2 20 inch pacus, 2 16 inch pbass, 1 18 inch marmoratus catfish, 1 11 inch chocolate pleco, and 5 5-6 inch tinfoil barbs. I also have a sponge prefilter which helps.

If the fluval FX5(3500L/hr) was able to fit more than 5.9l of bio media in it , it would be the best all round canister on the market. At the moment its mech filtering ability is great but lacks in the bio filtering department :(

Harley, if you added an fx5 to your tank it would be crystal clear...

Your expecting way to much from your usual eheim/fluval canisters, you need to look for large pond filters...

imo it would be hard for the filter to catch up.
anyway ur the "cannister man" u shud know that.
