Looking to move some fish around, my red head geos from a grow out tank, Also have a pair of red hump geos in the grow tank and pair gymneo yerbolitos, all these guys are ready to move up had them together under a year since under 1", and my severum notatus are in my cichlid comm tank but my more aggressive guys are getting bigger now and i wann move them cause they just starting to look stressed , opinions on keeping them together or different combos. i have an empty 125, grow tank is 30 planted, extra 30's, and a 55 may free up soon, .....All together in the 125 planted sound crazy? I may not keep all but please give me some opinions.

It depends on how many you have of each one. Sizes and quantities may help.

I keep my notatus severums with other peaceful cichlids. Mine have been with various types of Geos with no issues. The gymnos will require a cool-down period most likely, so I'd keep them alone in a tank that you can unplug the heater in. The notatus and orange heads won't fair as well in the winter with cooler water -- they tend to like it warm, in really high 70s to mid 80s. I keep my Geos and notatus at 80 - 82F all the time.

I didnt know about the cool down period, all the fish in the grow out tank are @78-80f. There getting to big for the grow out tank and time to move, m&f gymn m=3" f=2", m&f R hump 4"ea, 6 red heads dominant male 4", rest 2.5-3"
4 Notatus 5-6" 1m 3f,

I may not keep all of them as there are alot, but was thinking about a peaceful planted comm were they could breed happily, maybe a small scool of teras and a few cory. I have more exp with bigger aggressive fish, but i love these guys and plants that my other fish would shred.

Would the notatus or the red humps eat small tetras?

I agree with Ryan about the Gymnos, an unheated tank away from the tropical species is perfect.
I keep mine in a pond from May thru Oct where here in the north, water temps dip into the upper 40s F at night. They spawn in the pond every summer.

i would put the gymnos in the 55g and the rest in the 125g and see how everyone gets along. The gymnos will need the cool down period or they (especially sexually mature males) tend to get discolored and die.

I cant believe i missed this info about the gymneos, i am gonna have to do some more reading up on this spiecies.

I have only the one pair of the i was hoping to spaw, how large do they grow, do you guys think the 55 is needed for the 2 of them, they seem small and slower growing. Hope I didnt adversly effect them by keeping them in the heated tank all this time, just under 1year. My male is amazingly beautiful and would really be down on myelf if something happened to the pair. I got them from Jeff Rapps.

Any other tips about the gymneo s I might have missed.? What other fish would live in an unheated tank with them?

I apprieciate all you guys spending your time to help me thsnks

This is my pair

Sorry I miss read your gymnos stats, thought you had 3 males and 2 females, not male 3 inches and female 2 inches. The 30g should be fine for them but they'd appreciate the room of the 55g. Your species of gymno are harem breeders so I'd recommend getting more females if you do move them to the 55g.

As for other species of fish to keep with gymnos you can keep any thing that can handle the colder temps and has a peaceful demeanor. There are some types of tetras that could work, along with C. paleatus, some types of live bearers, white clould minnows, and others I can't think of at the moment.

I would get a couple more female gymnos and do the 55 as a tank for them as well. The orange heads and notatus should have plenty of room in the 125 as the geos don't get too huge on average and the single pair of notatus will probably claim one side of the tank if they spawn.

Is the 125 a 6' tank? That'd be ideal.
