I'm doing some research on builiding a 160 ga. 48x32x24 tank and was looking at the local Menards and the best thing I could find was 3/4" BCX Plywood for interior and exterior use $21 4x8 sheet. Would that work? I know the glass is going to cost me $160 for the 46x21 1/4x 3/8 peice from the local glass place. Plus I think I would use Pond Armor Epoxy so I think I could build the tank for about $280 total.

Here are pics of the stand I would use. I will be using right now to house my 40 breeder and 2 tens that are holding fry. When I build the 160 I will stop collecting the fry and let everyone spit in the tank. I need to get an 8' 2x8 to use on the 2 sides where you see the 2x4 not touching on the side to the top and bottom. I will add a brace in the middle of the front and possibly the back do I need one in the middle of the stand? Kinda hoping not. The stand is 48x32x25.5 it will be 26.5 once I get a sheet of 1/2" to use on the top and bottom, just big enough to move from the basement to the upstairs. The top is 29" runners from front to back spaced every 10.5" approx. I might be turning half of the bottom into a rabbit cage for my wifes we rabbit if I have to. That will leave me space for an FX5, Pro 3 2078(would prefer to use 2 of these instead of the FX5), 2229 Wet/ Dry. Thanks.

use the cheap 3/4" and use hardi board liner, then seal. See it done, looks clean. I think I've seen a thread here on MFK where someone shows it. search.

We'll I kinda got the go ahead to build, it may have to stay in the basement for awhile. Does anyone have pic on how the reinforced their corners? I'm thinking either 2x4 run across the entire back or 45ing a 4x4 for the back 2 corners but not sure how to do the front as the glass will need to come all the way out to the side almost. I will be using Pond Armor Epoxy for this tank so any help I can get would be great I will try and use paint to make a few crappy drawings later.

I used 3/4 sanded plywood, furniture grade. A sheet costs about $34, but I got lucky and found some culled pieces at a fraction of that. The GARF website has some good diy plans for tanks, which I used on this 180. I felt better with the higher grade of wood; perfect corners, no knots, etc. It was my first diy tank and no probs except for a tiny leak which some epoxy putty took care of. Let me know if I can be any help. Tom:D
