You've got to admire in aw at the sight of one of these rare fish.

They are kept by the keenest of keepers, those devoted to the ultimate of tank buster and those who fully understand their full growth potential and what devastation they can cause if given the chance.

Different people will say varying things about the size they can grow & how quick they can grow.

But like any other fish personal experience is by far the best, that is why I hae done this post so people can understand and share my experience of these wonderful fish.

I find that although my Aba Aba named fernando is relatively agressive, he is able to live in harmony with any large fish that does not move much ie our 12" Sailfin Plec. This is probably due to the way in which and Aba Aba looks for food, using electric pulses like radar rather than its eyes because they have very low visibilty.

At feeding time they will move very quickly often taking food back to its nest area for consumption. If their food is larger than its mouth they will shake their food pretty much the way a dog shakes a toy when playing.

As for growth we got Fernando at 7" in May 2006 & now at present is 14" (pictured) feeding on live food like Mollies & Shrimp. The growth has been steady with no sudden bursts but there is always food in the tank for the Aba Aba.

Anyways, I hope this information is usefull but please bear in mind it is my personal experience and each Aba Aba will vary. Also forgive the poor quality of the picture the water & occupants are being medicated.

Nice aba....what size tank do you have?

Cheers,

At the mo the aba is in a 5' x 2' x 18" while its being treated, then goes back to a 6'4" x 2' x 2' till the summer when the pond is finished.

just got my aba aba... works well with my gator. :) he is 6" right now.. and will possibly be alone when he hits 8 or so... the way it swims is just marvelous.. also, when u turn off the lights and turn just a dim night light on, this guys is so beautiful to watch as he is much active at the dark. he can swim backwards just as well as he can swim forward. personally i like this monster better than a ghost knife for it is better "built for the kill".

and yeap, sometimes it's aggression is really fun to watch it feeds on live fishes such as mollies and other feeder fishes. lastly, juves are so damn cute!!! haha!

Cool Aba man.. I dont think that they are that rare.. They are available here for about 10$ each.. They are one of the most interesting fish i have ever seen.. Im planning on getting 1 in the future..
