What about a Brachyplatystoma jurense? They grow slower, don't swim all that much, are a 'lighter bodied' catfish that is definitely not that messy. I think it works. Still gives you the option of adding in a couple smaller fish, as these guys don't eat other occupants quite as large as what Redtails and Paroons do.

hells yeah they're mean! i had a 6'' one kill and eat two 3.5'' whale cats in 24hrs:(. tore them to shreds, quite literally.
