cleaning gravel and plant roots

How do I go about cleaning gravel around plants? Since the roots are in the gravel how is it possible not to damage them. Plus, do i need to add any fertilizer on regular basis if I'm planning on keeping java fern and anacharis or any other plants?

Just lightly hover the vac to get the larger solid wastes up.

As for ferts, that will depend on the lighting over the tank. Java Ferns and Anacharis take their nutrients from the water, so liquid ferts (like Flourish Complete) might help. if there is sufficient light.
