This was my first reptile other than anoles and the occasional alligator lizard I would catch. In the late 80s,early 90s they were very common and only around $20. I’m sure they were wild caught, but mine was as an exceptionally good pet, would chill on my shoulder like a beardy or just hang out on my bed while I did homework lol
What happened to them? Anyone know why they fell off the face of the earth?

I do recall seeing them around every now and then perhaps a decade and some back. Did a bit of digging, and apparently Chile stopped exports back in the early 2000s or so, and they were considered difficult to spawn for one reason or another, leading to a lack of CB specimens.

in the late 90s early 2000s monitors/tegus were everywhere. barely see them now. so your not the only one who has noticed.

True, I also got a Peruvian Monitor Tegu a couple years after this guy and those have also disappeared, but they were not nearly as cool as the dwarf tegu-kinda bland looking with a bad disposition
