Who is dumping Directv because of Fox/FX/NatGeo?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I was mad when DirectTV dropped G4 - if they drop FuelTV and NatGeo I'm going to have to look elsewhere (after 14 years with DirectTV, it was called "Hughes Network" when we first signed up).

I wouldn't go with Dish Network even if you paid me...

I wouldn't panic yet, so much $ at stake, I'm sure the execs will work it out in time, just like the NFL season and the NBA sea... oh wait.

Maybe after it happens I would consider a change, but until then I don't think they'd shoot themselves in the foot (although as somebody pointed out Netflix just did). I just don't like the other options very much to make a change before I'm impacted.

Yeah I'm not doing anything yet. But if I wake up on November 1st and FX and NetGeo aren't in my channel listing, my service will be cancelled that same day. But you're right. I don't think Directv would be stupid enough to pull this move. It's PR suicide. I think they're just bluffing.

Hello; I moved about a year and a half ago and got direct on the suggestion of a friend. My contract will be up next spring and I was already considering a change. I will miss speed and nat geo if they go away.
What is the problem with dish satellite?? I have a cable company available and may go to that.

Here's their response, which I find shady

What is shady about it?

I don't think any of us could know the exact details of this negotiation enough to say which company is 'right', but if it comes down to trusting a Rupert Murdoch company or the other guy, I'll trust the other guy EVERY time...

The price hike. Fox is wanting 40% more from DTV, to be inline with what other cable providers pay. Those are the fees DTV pays to Fox, not that we pay. DTV is saying that our ENTIRE bill will increase by 40%. Those 5-7 channels don't comprise 40% of my channel lineup, why the heck would my whole bill increase by 40% just because of those stations? That means my $80 bill will increase by $32 just to keep FX and NatGeo? Makes no senses. I think they're trying to distort the facts to confuse customers.

To be fair, Directv says that you will pay 40% more for those channels, which doesn't correlate to a 40% increase on your total bill since they make up only a portion of your bill as you said. Nowhere on the site does it say your ENTIRE bill will increase by 40%.

Is it misleading? Maybe since they don't tell you the actual impact to your bill (maybe 5%?) but the big numbers look scarier, and they're trying to fight back against Fox.

I wouldn't trust Fox/Newscorp at all and I'm kinda glad they're fighting it. Anybody who says The Simpsons isn't profitable is either completely lying or totally incompetent.
