So how do you feel about your stocking rate at this point?

This is a point of confusion to me. Some say fewer fish, which conventional wisdom tells us, but I see a lot of talk about "spreading aggression"

I am planning (ie: saving money) for a large aquarium purchase/set up. Probably in the neighborhood of yours, between 100 and 150 gallons. I want to have a variety of different native sunfish, probably 1 specimen from 5-6 species (Bluegill, Shellcracker/redear/whatever, green sunfish, yellow perch, warmouth....). I would also like a black crappie, a black bullhead and a grass pickerel.

These fish should all reach a similar size I believe and I dont want any huge size advantages in my tank. I would love to keep a largemouth more than anything, but Im not prepared to house a fish like that long term. I think these fish on my list could live peacefully together as long as nobody is small enough to be prey and I dont have territory issues.

Several of these fish can be aggressive, but I think having many different species should help that some, rather than a gang of one fish. Im not entirely sure. So I am curious what your outlook would be on your current stocking rate if you werent planning to build a tank big enough to park a car in.
good post, heres my viewpoint, I have a 125g and it isn't overstocked at this point, I have had NO aggression issues with my 125g native tank at all, so everything has been fine, as you can see theres a ton of rocks and stuff in my tank and I even added more driftwood so everybody is happy in the tnak as far as I can see. I do have a largemouth bass in there but hes only like 3 inches long, will be a while before he's a monster, but one day he will be a monster..... sooooo I'm saving money right now far an even larger tank, one day, I'll sell my 125 and my empty 55 and use my saved money for an even bigger tank, which will be amazing.

Several of these fish CAN be aggressive, the most aggressive fish in my tank are the large bluegill and the pumpkinseed, but given the space there isn't a problem at all, I never have any nipped fins or anything like that.

If I wasn't going to build another tank honestly I'd still have a bass and when he gets to large just toss him in a different tank by himself, I purchased my bass and it was very small, a few inches I'm really not concerned about his size right now, it isn't like tomorrow hes going to be a big monsters (here come the annoying people who are going to tell me that he eventually will become huge)

I toyed with the idea of a 300 gallon plywood for bass, but thats just too much for me.

I want to try my hand at planting too, so that is the part Im trying to learn most right now. Just a few plants as most of the focus will be the fish. Some of the planted tanks I see are unbelievable.

It took me a minute on the Star Wars reference. You arent anywhere near Mos Eisley are you? Wretched hive of scum and villainry that it is.

Who lives with them the other 9 days a year? Just kidding.

Like I've said before, great tank. Can't wait to see it as it progresses.

IMO, green sunfish and other big-mouth sunfish should be avoided if you want a grass pickerel. Tried housing three different young northern pike with green sunfish and rock bass, dont work since they keeps eat all pikes' food.
