Hello Micheal it was nice to see your tanks illustrated. Over the years I have told others I had an aquaintance with a person who,s largest tank had more volume than my two story home. If they fail to give that statement credence they can search for it on the internet. Good luck Don Davis. By the way I was supprized at first that you had a dauhter that old but you were in the age range of my children and Barb and I now have three great grand children with the remote possibility of seeing their children.

To add a post sript. I saw this site in the past but the location threw me. I assumed it was in the middle east someware and with the billions of humans on the planet it was possible for two to have so many similarities. Then I discovered that the location is in outerspace.

No its close to the centre it would take another 3 or 4 days by car to reach eastern point of NewFoundLand. You'll find it nice once you get away from Toronto. If you are near Victoria I had a brother in law arrive there on a motorcycle 40 years ago and never came back.

Hope your well Arapaimag.
I've seen a couple Gar fish in my LFS and wondered if you had any experience with them? These were Spotted and Florida Gars. I'd love an Alligator Gar but not sure of the legalities in the UK.

incredible tank, i'm trying to convert my Koi pond into an "monster Pond", i'm working on closing the pond and thermally insulated it's an 25 M3 pond, it's small in comparison of you tank. Maybe i 'll ask you some questions about the fish that i can put inside.

I made some "monster Fish" in the Photo lounge, it will be a pleasure for me to make one for you, whith all the fish of your tank

Sorry for my english, i'm still learning ^^

Follarin emailed me recently and here are his questions regarding my fish/tanks etc. and my replies.

1 ) *How do you do for keeping african cichlid and south american cichlid in the same tank ? the water use to be very different in the nature. Frontosa and Oscar are my favorites fish, and you manage to have them in the same tank ! In fact you manage to have so many great fish in the same tank, that ‘s incredible !!

Both fish that I have were bred & raised in north america using the same or very similar water hardness and ph that I have, so no problem in my tanks. Wild caught would need adjustment. The fronts have bred in the 52k and friends estimate more than 60 adults. I have seen the arapaima eat some young adults (15cm to 25cm). The female Wallago leerii has taken some of the bigger ones up to 35cm also.

2) I read that you have Guppys on your 55k ??!!, how can they survive with all the Cichlid in the tank ??, it's incredible

actually its only a 52k gallons (196k litres). Yes with so many predators it is a bit amazing.

3) I believe that you have some characin in the tank, are they predator characin like Acestrorhynchus Lacustris, Acestrorhynchus Isalineae, Acestrorhynchus Heterolepis? or very little fish like tetra innesi ? ^^ you have guppys on the tank so it's possible ^^

I have about a dozen of Brycon dentex, B. guatemalensis, B. hilari, *B. melanopterus. The brycons are very good predators but the guppies still survive and reproduce probably because the guppies are so small compared to the brycons, some of which are 26 inches (66cm). Most were in the 15k g(56k litre) originally and then moved a few years ago to the 52k g (196k litres). The brycons are a lot hardier than the*Acestrorhynchus species. My only experience was with A. falcatus and although a good predator it could not fight well with hardier characins or cichlids so would get killed very quickly in my big tanks.

4) I don't understand one of your post, the asian red tail it 's nasty like the dovi?

In my experience most Hemibagrus *are very bed tempered. Parachromis dovii I find are very nasty when kept in smaller tanks 800 g /3,000 litres or under. But my experience is that when adjusted to my larger tanks they are OK. This is possibly because I have had only a male in each tank.

5) i know that in the 55 the fish who are more than 12 are more hunt buy big predator, but i never saw some fish who could be very nice addition to the 15 or 55 tank : **

Polypterus
Would get killed/eaten in either tank. I do have several species P. teugelsi, P. delhezi, P. mokelembembe, P. senegalus, P. weeksii, P. ansorgii in smaller tanks. I have owned P. bicher, P. ornatipinnis and P. palmus in the past.[/I][/COLOR]
,
Peacock bass
There is a Cichla monoculus in the 15k about 25cm was attacked once by the dorado but recovered and has not. I also have a C. kelberi also around 25cm in a smaller 560 gallon.

*, African Tiger Fish,Hydrocynus Vittatus
Under 24" 60cm would get killed by the dorado. I do have some in smaller tanks 180 to 360g .

, Channa Micropeltes, Channa Marulius,*channa aurantimaculata, channa pleurophthalma, Channa Argus

Snakeheads are now illegal where I live. But have owned several in the past when they were legal. My favourites that I owned where C. bleheri, one of the prettiest and named after a friend of mine and might have done OK in the 15k/56k l . *The 36"/75cm C. micropeltes *another favourite I owned in the 1990's would have done well in either tank but would have taken out a lot of fish. I gave it away to a friend that wanted it badly.*
,
Hydrolycus,
Have several H. tatauaia (7 to 10 inches 18/25 cm) and one H. scomberoides (8inches/20cm) but in a smaller 360 g/1360 l tank *the dorado would kill them in the 15k/56k l at their current size. The brycons and catfish would wipe them out in the 52k g/196k l. A H. armatus at 24"/60 cm would be fine probably in either tank but I don't have that species.

Cynodon Gibbus,
not available to me and are so similar to the Hydrolycus which I do keep.

Pellona Flavipinnis,
Freshwater sardines even that get large like these do (1kg to 1.5kg and 50cm are interesting but not something I want. I actually have never seen/noticed them in any store. I did have several Triportheus angulatus in the big tank from 2001 to 2011. More attractive and also a shoaling fish although the Pellona might actually school in my tank.

tales japonicus,
Do not know that fish. But since it’s from Japan it would be a temperate fish and probably not do well in my warm tanks.
I do know Omphalotus japonicus but that’s a mushroom.

Hoplias Lacerdae, Hoplias Malabaricus

Keep 4 species of wolves H. aimara, H. curipira, H. malabaricus and Erythrinus erythrinus the peruvian wolf in smaller tanks. The smaller species probably would be Ok in the 15k g/56k l. The aimara would be OK in the big tank.
,
Large mouth Bass,
not legal to keep as pets where I live and they do not like warm water.

Raphiodon vulpinus,
Nice teeth but never owned.

Elopichthys Bambusa,
these guys get huge but I have never seen them for sale in any of the stores I visit however I believe Wes has brought them in.

Boulengerella Lucius,

A very nice characin but never owned and I don’t think would handle the tougher cichlids well.

Short nose Gar, long nose gar,
Have 2 florida short nose and 1 cuban in 15k. Have a long nose and alligator in 52k.

Siniperca Chuatsi
Yes I have owned 2 of the Chinese perch, which I got from MFK guru Neoprodigy and had they lived would have done well in either big tank.
,
african arrowana,
I don’t think it would do well in either tank even if it was large because I believe it would have trouble competing for food.

datnoides Pulcher,
Have owned several Tigers but never put them in the big tanks but they probably would have done well.

Lates Cacarifer, lates niloticus,

Owned one niloticus in past but none now. And yes it would have done fine in either tank but some of the smaller fish wouldn’t.

Zungaro Zungaro,
Have a small one in a 110. Had a 36" plus in the big tank till 2004.

some pike,
cichlids? have owned several but they would have no chance in either tank.

Polyodon Spathula,
never owned but how would I feed it in either tank? the American paddlefish is really a filter feeder.

pangasianodon gigas,
not available. Did buy some sold as gigas in Scotland at 6cm but when I raised them it was obvious they were not. They were Pangasius sanitwongsei which I actually much prefer anyway. Far more active and shark like in swimming and attacking. Had some in the 15k but moved them one day when Oliver Lucanus was visiting He got nailed on the leg by one of them when he was netting them. They grew to 36"/90cm then I lost a 6 in 2004. I had *3 other smaller ones in other tanks, put them into the 52k and in time they started attacking the Arapaima when they got bigger, so I lowered the water and friends caught them and I gave them to a friend who has an indoor pond.

i
blue catfish,
had 2 around 2 feet both were killed by a asian red tail a lot smaller than them in a 480 gallon.

green terror
Have had them in the 15k but the dorado killed and ate them.

, Nandopsis Haitiensis,
Have lots (200 to 300 fry). In other tanks including a 15" male and several 7 to 9 inch females that I bred and raised. I sell some *of his offspring to pet shops locally. When I placed some other breeding pairs into the 15k they were killed. The big male might some day go into the 15k and he will not get killed by any other fish.

texas Cichlid
Owned in past but I prefer the jack dempsey. Which I have several breeders in smaller tanks and some fry. Had them breeding in the 15k but the dorado wiped them out with a few weeks of it's introduction in 2011. I do have at least one pair in the 52k as of January this year. They survive by hiding in the rock structures.
,
Xenentodon cancila,
??? never owned but would not last seconds in either tank. Never had much interest in most the needlefish sold as gars.

festae
Have owned in past but none now. Do have a female Amphilophus urophthalmus (the false red terror) in the 15k for several years.

, aspius aspius
Not a tropical fish and would not do well in warm water for a long period. Asps normally breed in the spring when their water gets to about 6 to 8 degrees above freezing.

asterophysus batrachus
Have several Gulpers in a smaller tank, they would not be able to compete with the faster fish in the 15k and probably would be taken our by the dorado, wyckii or the Sperata aor in the 15k. In the big tank they would be eaten by the bigger cats.

serranochromis,

Never owned any but since medium sized african cichlids do Ok in the 52k they probably would also. In the 15k if they were at least 10 inches they would have a chance.

Ctenolucius hujeta
Another false gar(actually a characin) that I never owned. But I do like this oneIt would get killed in either tank in seconds. Also although there are guppies in the 52k with a surface area of over 700 square feet this characin would not be able to catch enough to survive*

, gymnarchus niloticus
I have one that is about 1 metre but have never had it in the big tanks.

, plotosus caninus
Its a marine catfish and might live in freshwater but I have no interest in it.
,
parapteronotus hasemani,

The hasemani ghost knifefish I have never owned but I do not think it would do well in my big tanks. I do keep 3 trumpet knife fish Ramphichthys rostratus a great fish to own, in a 120g/450l.

flat head catfish
Do you mean Ageneiosus marmorata?
If so I do have a few of these. Mine are 25 to 30cm and I’m not sure i they would be Ok in the 15k.

and Umbee.
I’ve had two, both females and they were in the 15k in different periods.

Ho!! the Salminus maxillosus it’s nice too.
I have dorado S. brasiliensis which is the same fish. Valenciennes in 1850 named it maxillosus not realizing it had already been named by Cuvier in 1816.

6) Do you have some turtle like the pig nose turtle?
I don’t but I do have a Florida soft shell. It does not go in either tank.

7) Who it's your favorite fish?
Arapaima
