I guess I hit a hot button here for someone. :) The fact that they were designed for one use doesn't mean they won't work in another. I am sorry but I am not the type of person to just accept that it will not work without trying it as long as it makes sense to me. I already have the bio balls, so setting up a filtration system and testing its efficiency won't cost me any more money, and worse case scenario I see that it doesn't work and swap the media out.

One thing I have learned is that you don't know who you are really talking to on forums such as this. I was honest and said I was going to do it no matter what. I was hoping for a brainstorming session with a number of you who I consider my intellectual peers, however the response I received was "because it won't stupid"

Anyone have reasons it won't work based on experience?

Hit the hot button?
Where did I say "stupid"? You asked a simple question. I gave you a simple answer. Bio balls are designed hold bio on them. They are designed for wet/dry applications. They do not work on the same principle as reactor media. Really wish I was better at sugarcoating things so I could give you a more polite sweet answer. It sounds like what you need to do is look next to that "hot button" and find the "easy" button and press that. Maybe that will give you the answers you're looking for......

How bout explaining why you would want to try bio balls in a reactor when you KNOW they'll work better in a wet/dry?

Cause you want to be different? Great! Build it and post a video.

Like I said earlier, anyone that wants something bad enough will figure out a way to make it work.... No one saidd it won't work.

Very much south..
Guys, i look amazed at your savyness...
Pelase help me ( no derailing, me thinks )

I have a 25 gallon glass tank, drilled, set besides my sump.

Water flows from the sump by a pump ( flow is just enough to keep water level on the top of the glass cube ) and water fall back into the sump by gravity

( this was used as a planted refugium, but leaves clogged permanently the return tube with the inherent overflow / and it was used to put smaller fish in case of need )

Now i have it installed in place, working but just with water. ( unused, therefore )

Could i transform this into areactor type?

Some good airstones fixed to the bottom?

Maintain the slow flow that enters the cube and the gravity back to the sump?

What media could i use? ( being in europe i do not know what you mean by K1, k3 or chips )

Would this work better with sand, and if so, how much sand should i put in there to ensure a proper system?

Would it work bettere with other kinds of media? Extruded glass? Nitrate removing pears ( as done by uk's TROPICAL MARINE CENTRE ) ?

something other?

Any risks , pitfalls to take into account?

Where should the " reacted water " fall into? The return chamnpber of the sump?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Miguel

Seems like you and I will need something a bit larger, I think the main point is that it is limited to media amount, where a larger tub or tank or barrel we can put at least 1 cube foot of media in it easy, My understanding doing the math is that a cube foot will take care of about 1.3lbs of food feeding.

Ek what size tank are you running this reactor on? I was thinking of running this reactor on my 600.gallon

I am running it on a 180+75g sump.

It's much more than what the tank volume would need but for the bigger tanks I would look into the larger reactors or daisy chain them.

Lots of interesting information here. It seems more ray keepers are going the direction of the reactors. I've always used a large wet/dry sump on my 750g and have had rays in there for more than 3 years and breeding for the last 2. I feed heavily and my stock is always quite plump but my filtration seems to do the job and keep up. I'm open to ideas and I like to read the info on filtration thats out there but I'm just not seeing the need to switch. I'm I missing the boat on this one?

Thats why I started this thread, I have been holding to my current setup for a while and started to think what I could do to add something more to it even though I do not think its 100% needed but sure can't hurt and maybe Ill see a change or I will learn something along the way. Also like scott said, I love to just build stuff and try new DIY projects. Maybe its a way to fight boredom.

Question: If i ran a bead filter. Would a bio filter be needed? Or do they do pretty much the same thing?

Silent bob, where your water is comming into your reactor you should twist that elbow a little to one side so its no comming in so close to the drain

What about his flow rate? Didn't it seem too much? I thought it was supposed to be lower
