Joining this late. I think you may need to revisit the 2" hole between your two sumps. I think you may need one or most likely two more 2" holes to maintain the flow between the sumps. Your set up right now to overflow the first sump and fill that stand and ultimately fill your living room with water.Another slow weekend so not too much done. The extra Pond Shield I ordered was backordered and won’t be here until the end of this week so I have been kind of stalled out until that arrives. There are things to be done in the meantime but I have just been tinkering. Here’s the current progress
I started setting up the 55 gallon that will have the mechanical filtration and refugium.
Drilled the hole for the 2" bulk head to connect to the 90 gallon bio sump.

Thanks for the tip, however I've done some small scale testing of this and it seemed to work just fine. Plus I already have the sumps set up ready to go. If it starts to be a problem I can easily add another 2" pipe.Joining this late. I think you may need to revisit the 2" hole between your two sumps. If its not too late you should abandon the two sump system and just install one large sump.
Edit: Another thing you can do to reduce the amount of holes between the two sumps is raise the 55 gallon sump as high as possible. It will make it more difficult to change out your filter socks but at least it will work.
One large sump is my #1 recommendation.
