Wintering an Outdoor Tropical

right now outside temperature is at 60. the tank is at 80 with the heater plugged in but the light is off. Still not quite done. There are a few more things to finish up.
woke up and checked the temp. it got into the low 50in the early mornings. light on heater was off tanks was at 80.

I bent these clips from some 8" strips.

What underneath the stand looks like insulated. I added extra insulation around the sump.

this looks like it could work. I'd be a little worried about the plants. you could use some plastic to make them a little greenhouse. my dad makes little greenhouses for spring using clear 4 mil plastic sheeting.

Theres enough water volume it looks like itll hold heat very well.
It would be cool to check it with an infared laser type thermometer if you have one. My buddy has one for working on hot rods we used to mess around with it. You can just point and shoot the thing all over and find your weak spots where the heat escapes. They are inexpensive iirc. Cheap at harbor freight if scientific accuracy isn't key.

Also consider making things nice and secure to compensate for days when the wind picks up. Keep tap on the weather forecast and perhaps secure everything down with a large tarp and plenty of rope/cord when you know the wind is going to be picking up
