I currently have a wolf fish that was sold to me as a black and I believe it is a mala. I have 75, 55,29g tanks at the moment but I'm open to going as large as 180. In the 55 g I currently have an odoe pike and 2 hujeta gars all about 5 inches. My plan was to grown them up and add them to my wolf tank and eventually upgrade. My other questions is that I have an opportunity to buy what is called a rainbow high fin wolf? Would that serve as a better tank mate for my other fish? The first pixtures I'll add are of my current fish and the last will be the "rainbow". And identification help or knowledge would be great. The wolf in the first pic is likely a mala. Most common and u need jaw pics/pores/ lateral like shots for confirmation.

I will say this that the odoe pike will get bigger than ur hujeta gars. They are push overs for sure. Getting a red wolf will be fine except for the odoe pike. It will likely kill/injure/stress the red wolf.

The mala will be ok with the odoe pike just because of size and aggression but not with ur hujeta gars. Don't mix a red wolf with other wolves as it will not end well. They are tough but not to much bigger fish.

The odoe pike and mala will benefit from the 180g.

The hujeta gar and red wolf will benefit from a 100g IMO.

It depends on what ur willing to move, give up, or let become an expensive feeder.

I had a rainbow wolf for a bit and if you keep him fed you may be ok with others. He ended up attacking a hujeta gar when he went a day or two without feeding (he wouldnt eat in front of me so I tried to go a little while before feeding him to get him to eat in front of me). I would say though he is a much much better choice for a community tank than a mala. A friend of mine got a 3-4inch mala a few months ago. He is almost 6-7inches now and is a killing machine. He is the most mean fish I have seen in person. I dont think he could be kept with anything else.

Well mentioned by cjam93 that the rules are for majority and there will be some wolves that will have more aggressive or less based on their own temperment.

I would suggest separating the hujeta gar in their own tank and keep the mala and odoe pike together.

Can add the rainbow to ur tank with the hujeta gar if u pull the trigger on it.

Oh I also have 4 silver dollars with the wolf right now. Do they need to go as well? I'm trying to figure out the size difference I want when I add the odoe with the wolf. I thought the odoe would grow faster and he is growing fast but so is the wolf. Should I wait until the odoe gets larger or should I put him in now in case the wolf keeps growing faster

The wolf isn't much longer but is so much thicker. He has been eating worms and feeders but wouldn't take beef heart. I think it needs the movement. Odoe has taken several cichlid pellets but mostly feeders

Well for me it will be a curu if you can get one.
But all depends how much dough you have in your hand. If you have both dough and space then Aimara is the way to go :)

What you have is likely mala. Can't really make 100% IDs in tank. But none the less likely mala.

The silver dollars should be ok. As they will get wide and big enough. Keep the mala fed.

A red wolf would be fine in a 55g for life with a very few tankmates.

Yeah that's what I thought I was buying but didn't know any better. I definitely don't have the space for aimara. Also not much dough, unless it's a Elongatus. But even then, not much dough. I'd like to see some pictures or people with an aimara.
