Thread for my two Albino Senegals

Hi everyone. I recently just got back into the hobby(12 days ago). I stopped in 2012 and I'm happy to be back. This time with two Albino Senegals. I might add a Knifefish or an Arowana but that will be in the future. For now I'm really content on my two Albino Senegals.

This is my tank. It is aprox. 115gallons

and here are my Albino Senegals

My only problem right now is that I'm using the substrate that I had before, and I only realize now that for Albino Senegals, the best(appearance wise) is a black or red substrate. If I'm going to change my substrate, would you guys/gals with more experience than me recommend just putting the black or red substrate on top of my old substrate? or just removing my old substrate completely and like starting from scratch?

I say mix your current substrate with alot of red, inthe future thats what im going to do. This is my friend Vancouver_98683 substrate. Sorry for using your pic. Lolz


I change from black sand to red substrate cause red will bring out more contrast on any bichirs color, pattern will show more on red substrate. Black sand is nice on albino but if your planning to buy more bichirs in the future the bichirs might turn really dark on black substrate. Bichirs do camoflage on their substrate, i had bichirs turn really dark and you cant really see the pattern.

albinos are one of the smallest species right? so i think as much as i love bichirs, i wont add any more bichirs on my tank as my albinos could become dinner, as you said in your thread why you had to trade-in your albinos.

i think i'm gonna stick with black sand and mix it a little with my current substrate

You can always add some, ex. Senegalus/common sengelas/dragon fin, delhazi, palmas polli, palmas palmas, beuttikoferi/gold dust, mokelembembe & retropinnis, all that ive mention are called upper jaws, they are the same jaw as your albino and they dont get to big like lower jaws. They are more i mean more nicer than lower jaws and they dont do cannibalism like lower jaw species.
You wont have any problems with this guys and your albino sen would love a larger group to hang out with.

i searched all those species you mentioned and i like all of them. while searching for them i found a really beautiful Polypterus Ornatipinnis as well. but i went to the largest pet fish market here in my city and i didn't see a good red substrate like yours. the ones that i found are more like pink. so i got some dark stones instead. they look like the type of substrate that you'll see under most rivers here in my country and i like it as it gives my tank a more natural look

i thought that i couldnt go wrong with this even if i get a bichir someday of the darker color

Ornate gets really big and its really mean, imo its the meaness and baddest of all upper jaw species, thats why i dont recommend it if you just wanna stay on the small size bichir. Ornate's are pretty but they grow to 20"-24" and they are territorial and can kill and will eat any smaller bichir giving it a chance. I had a 5" ornate that ate a 3" endlicheri,that is 2" difference in size. That was the reason i trade my albino sen cause my ornate was quickly catching up to their size. In less that a month the ornate grew from 2" to 5".

that means no ornate for me then unless i get another tank. i'll stick to the ones you mentioned above in case i'm going to add other bichirs.

There is 3 upperjaw that grows big, ornate, teugelsi & weeksii. Wild teugelsi will cost $$$ and they grow the biggest and its really calm, weeksii grows big too but takes awhile and its calm to, ornate is the worst of the three, grows big and mean as hell.

my albino senegals have a kind of sentimental value to me so yeah no tankmates that might endanger them. i think among the ones you mentioned, i find palmas polli the most appealing. would it be a good tankmate for my albinos?

and btw would you recommend feeding saltwater fish? im currently feeding shrimp and tilapia to them

Pretty nice bichir you have. I would recommend feeding Hikari Carnivore. They will get all the good nutrients that they require. Shrimps and others are just treats.
