Although Franks photo is a wild fish, goldfish kept in good conditions will (and should ) grow quite large.
I believe the fact most don't grow, is because some aquarists don't provide conditions needed. Even the fancy type should be given large enough quarters to reach potential.
The one below started out at 0.5" a little over 2 years before this pic was taken.
They grow very large in ideal conditions. They are probably easier than O's for a 55 though

Kittiee Katt Kittiee Katt .....what do you think, Eb?
Only just seen this...

Even fancy goldfish can get upwards of 20cm, granted they grow a little slower than common goldfish but can still get to very substantial size.

Goldfish are also waste machines, the only fish I've kept that rivals goldfish for waste is my pleco.

I wouldn't get a fancy with the intentions to keep it in a 55, and seeing as how goldfish like the company of their own kind I think even if you double it to a 110gal you would still need a very strict and thorough cleaning routine to keep the water clean for even three fancy goldfish once they started to hit the 20cm mark. :)

This guy estimates his oranda to be 12" long, they get very large

If you want some good fish for a 55 why not look into some of the smaller cichlid species? Or even a betta with some tetras and cory cats would be much better suited to a 55 than a pair of oscars or fancy goldfish. :)

not sure your handspan, but i'm guessing that fish is between 8-10" counting the caudal

Heck, that's not even full grown for a well kept fancy goldfish. I've seen them with softball sized bodies. That takes some doing though.. Warm pond, or huge tank and lots of quality food.

Two of my 3 fancies (2-3yrs/old) would fit inside that "palm" goldfish!

Goldies are fun to keep in their own way.
