I want to get experience so I can breed red tiger motaguense. Before I drop 108$ to get them shipped in, what's a good, widely available, cichlid to get experience. Im not new to fish by any means and know a decent amount about community fish but I'm looking to get into central/south american cichlids. I have a 90gallon to dedicate at the moment.

HRP are easy and not overly aggressive. I had 3 breeding pairs in a 150g and they never caused problems.

I'm looking for something a little more difficult than convicts. Would jack dempseys be a good idea?

Yes, and easy to sex. Also consider salvini. They do get very aggressive sometimes and especially when breeding.
I am interested in salvini, how would you recommend breeding them, adding a group of six and paring them off? And how large do they get?

Yup, group of six. Easy to sex though. Females have a blue/black blotch on the dorsal. Males get 8" and females 6". They are slow growers and would take a long time to get there.
Here's a female I had.

Just get some Motag's and a bigger tank, and maybe a third tank. I'm pretty surprised how much more aggressive Trimac's are than Vieja and Midas I've kept before, and I think Motag's are probably a whole new level of aggression, too.

If you've never done any CA cichlids before, maybe you could learn keeping some cheap locally acquired fish. But, they probably won't be too much like Motag's.

And if you keep just a pair of Motag's in a tank, and a divider, you won't see a whole lotta crazy aggression anyway....maybe.

I did do the math and if I order eight it would be 15$ a fish so after they pair off I could sell the rest for a similar price if possible. I'll see if anyone at my club would want to order some other cichlids too and cut costs down. Thanks for the help everyone. And I am interested in getting a salvini/firemouth tank if it would work out.
