Personally I'd go for a jag if you can get a big enough tank, if not go for a motaguense like the other guys have said, there a cool little fish with bags of personality

Are you looking for a wet pet of sorts? I second the Motaguense recommendation, they're basically a smaller, red Jag. If you're looking for a big personality then you'd be hard pressed to find a better suggestion than a flowerhorn for that sized tank.
Yeah I've been looking for a sort of wet pet since I can't get a tank larger than 150 gallons. I looked up the montaguense and they looked really stunning. I'm still not sure if I'm a fan of the flowerhorn kok, so the montaguense might be a really good alternative if I decide against a flowerhorn.

Here are some other options that would be fine solo in a 125-150 long term
N. Tetracanthus
C. Grammodes
C. Istlanum
V. Breidohri
A. Saggitae/Citrinellum/lyonsi/labiatus/trimaculatus (any amphilophus really)
H. Carpintis
Seriously good suggestions here. Breidohri are arguably the most colorful cichlid one can own, one of my personal favorites.

Out of all the fish suggested I think I've narrowed my choices down to either a flowerhorn or V. Breidohri. Unless the V. Breidohri could be mixed with a pleco and maybe a few other similarly sized fish I'll probably just go for the flowerhorn and have a single wet pet.

Breidohri could be kept with a pleco for sure. Similarly sized fish would be do-able but difficult to get a mix that works in this sized tank. Could pretty easily be kept with some smaller species like Honduran red points or Salvini.
Something like 1 breidohri, 1 pleco (commons get huge- smaller fancy would be better), 5 Honduran red points would probably work out fine. 150 would be better if you wanted to try this, 125 would be do-able as well just have to keep up on maintenance when the fish are all large.

Ok thanks for all the input guys. The more I think about it I think it would be best if I waited a few years before I set up a cichlid community tank so I can do a larger tank and have more experience keeping large aggressive Cichlids. I think in the meantime though I'll stick with my original intention of getting a flowerhorn as my first big cichlid.

Get both it's not hard.

Flowerhorns of course.
And I've kept them both. Jags are cool too but I breed FHs and Jags can't sell like FHs. People like FHs because it's a package of many goodies

Any luck keeping Flowerhorns with other fish? I would love to keep a flowerhorn with some kind of fancy pleco, but I've heard flowerhorns will kill anything else in the tank unless you have a huge tank.

I've kept them with other aggressive fish, Amphilophus and Vieja. I wouldn't recommend it based on my personal experience but I reckon a pleco would be fine.
