As I'm right now I work at a company called hoodz.. We go in at night (mostly) and clean dirty greasy kitchen exhaust systems in restaurants and other facilities. Iv been there over a year and a half and honestly I hate it.. But my boss has been more than good to be and has known my family since before I was born. I'm the only employee as people just don't wanna work for their money apparently....

Today I got an interview at a job where I would go around in my own truck and change air filters... Easy work and they pay is 40k-60k a year... But I have to use my own truck and pay for my own gas and go out of town at least once a week... Also would have to buy tools and even a topper for my truck ($800)

So here's my question... I have the job and have put in my 2 weeks.. But last week my current boss (hoodz) told me if I leave then he'll have to close the doors to the business... The reason I took the job was because I feel it could be better for me in the long run (more money and better schedule) but is it the right thing to do? Every business had to have people stay with them to get them to the point their at now.

Yea that's what I'm trying to figure out.. Switching jobs will probly make things better but what the point if u screw someone over in doing so?

But my boss has been more than good
Hello; A rare thing not to be thrown away lightly.

a job where I would go around in my own truck and change air filters.
Hello; I once tried the "work out of my own truck" thing. I take it you will have to maintain the truck. Tires, oil changes, brakes, gas, insurance, depreciation ( you will have to keep a reliable truck) and so on. It will add up to more than you think unless you are a mechanic. I was a mechanics and still these things took a big chunk out of the profits.

I have to use my own truck and pay for my own gas and go out of town at least once a week
Hello; I take it you will be in motels and eating out on your own dime.

buy tools and even a topper for my truck ($800)
Hello; More money out of pocket up front. Sounds like you are taking the risks if things do not work out. and will be stuck with special tools. My guess is you will also be considered a private contractor and may need to have some form of liability insurance.

Hello; The money you can make is the gross income but you will have to subtract all the mentioned costs to see how much you can make. Usually called the "net". Probably should figure on the lower 40K amount minus the expenses.

current boss (hoodz) told me if I leave then he'll have to close the doors to the business
Hello; That is the kicker. Add to messing over someone good to you, the new job will eventually be "just a job" and you may hate it even more.

Also, if you are indeed considered a private contractor, you will be covering your own medical insurance as well.

Just my 2 cents

Really evaluate your job vs previous jobs. And then ask yourself do you not like the job or do you not like working? I hate working...at least in the traditional sense.

If you just hate your job then it's time to move on. But do consider all the things skjl47 said If you are an independent contractor I hope you know how to do taxes very well or have a good tax guy. Independent contract sucks because they take so much more taxes out so be ready to write off everything and make up stuff to write off without setting off any red flags.

If you just hate working then just stay at your old job and work on changing your mindset. Smaller victories to make the day go quicker and hopefully make work more enjoyable.

A lot of times this is the case for me. So instead of finding another job I'll get tired of in a few years. I'm doing my best to keep the job I have while learning other skills like gardening, auto mechanics, house repair, and the one that takes up most of my time fish keeping. None of them actually make me any money but I get to spend time at home close to my family rather than off doing something I hate. And since it saves me money then I'm not working to pay off the vegetable bills, car repairs (which is always inflated at a mechanics but hey they gotta make a living too), and house repairs (which is also inflated).

Tldr: really think it over. A lot of times the grass looks greener on the other side but it might take more work then it's worth to keep it green.

At the new job taxes would be taken out of my check monthly and when I go out of town my food hotel and some gas would be covered.... I just got off work and talked a lot about it with my current boss and he said nothing to discourage me from taking the job as he understands that I need to do what's best for be... That being said he did say that in a few months I'll be getting a raise.. Guaranteed 8 hours a day pay and more vacation time... The main 2 things he said that stood out to Me was 1. Don't grow up to fast (I'm only 20) and 2. Is he'd rather see me go into a trade and actually learn how to do something.... He even talked to me about what he was thinking about doing with the business if I leave wether he should sell it and focus on his second business or try and find more guys to work... TBH I'm thinking about staying even tho the job sucks and the pay is Eh. My current boss also said if I want he can help me get into some type of trade job as he know plenty off ppl from FedEx owners to private contractors. Another thing I had to think greatly about was if the new job didn't turn out how I wanted I would just come back to hoodz... Well that might not be the case if he sells the buisness so in a sense of be throwing all my eggs in 1 basket by switching jobs.
