Flint town!
I found a sprinkler valve that will close when power is cut to stop flow. It worked, but the problem is what if it fails? Also that turned a $60 project into a $100 project. I couldn't keep it from leaking when the power was off any other way. That was with only a 30gal brute above it what if it was my 180? I wasn't going to risk it. But while power was on not a drop and I was using a 1000 gph pump like you pretty much same set up. Really wish it would've worked. I went with a sump. It' in my living room and I need to quiet it down so I've been slowly setting up to go full syphon with it (I tried but used ball valves and could get the two sides synced). Sump with wet dry are in the basement under the tank so hopefully all I hear when done will be a trickle of water.

Nice. I was actually considering putting a dump Under the pier and beam of my house. There's about 40" of headroom under there. But opted for this for temp regulation. I'm getting pretty lucky that a 800w heater is keeping the tank at 80*f But I am going to look into the sprinkler valve for sure. Thanks for posting.

Sprung a leak! The glass pulled away. Pretty bummed about that. I used rtv and let if cure a week before filling. I drained it and thought I patched it a few days ago. Although the leak got smaller, it didn't go away. So as much is I dont want to, I need to pull the glass off and clean it to start over. The bad thing is since it didn't leak for about a month, it is now built in much more into the wall and it's not going to move without me pulling off a lot of finish material. So I'll try and clean it up and re-install the the glass virtically. I drained it again so today I'll try and find the exact area

Wow bummer! Sorry to hear that.
Well there's a small chance I can make this work still. The other day water was leaking out of 5 tiny spots on the bottom of the viewing window. I drained and ran a bead on the outside and a spot inside I believe driftwood gouged to see if that would fix it. It didn't but greatly reduced down to one tiny pinhole that I located today after stripping that seam back off.

My drain only drains to the last 60-100gallons so had to bale out some bit once the water level was lower than window level, that tiny bead coming out of Pinole sucked back in. So I'm going to inject marine silicone into that marked area and refill to level I know will leak. It's literally a dot that gets the size of a penny after an hour or two. I know plenty will say just start over. But it's just in my stubborn blood to see if I can patch this tiny leak.

I'm honestly pretty surprised I didn't just put a bucket under the tank and empty it once a month. I'm "maturing", ...kinda.

How much did the canisters cost to make as I want to do something like that
With pump l, $120 ish. I'm already replacing them though. As mentioned and realized earlier, they work pretty great, but once the pump is turned off (or power outage) the siphon continues and it will leak all over the place. So if you build one, consider that and engineer or put in a check/backflow deal so it can't drain. Bummer though because it otherwise worked pretty dang well.

I think I'll just buy a new filter then
