Tank Upgrade 450-550g Planning

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Congrats man!!! I’m jealous! You must be pretty pumped about it

Very excited. Decided to go all clear and will paint the tank myself. I had to pull the trigger because there is a 10-12 week lead time and I need to do this project in June. Need to finalize planning so I can provide these guys with final specs of what I want.

Well I am happy to say that today I put down a deposit with fishtanksdirect for a custom 535g (8x4x30in) tank. I will be having a call next week with their tank builder to iron out the specific details. I have decided to go with a fully clear tank and I will be painting the back and bottom myself. I wanted to originally go with Midwest but found a lot of positive feedback on FTD and the price differential was too much considering they were both using 3/4in acrylic for all panels.
Congratulations!!!!! Looking forward to your design !

I’m actually thinking of doing plants instead of bare bottom. Not extreme but need to research substrate. I don’t want to worry about cleaning gravel so prefer something where waste sits on top and will get pulled into filters easily.

Sand. Too compacted and you’ll have issues with anaerobic pockets creating sulfur dioxide. Go with a grade similar to PFS. You can put a layer of laterite and then cover that layer with mesh netting. Put the PFS/sand over the mesh layer.

mrrobxc mrrobxc i was thinking miracle grow or there is his stuff that is used on baseball fields that I know many people use. Need to find the name again

Any organic additive free soil will work but you’ll want to mineralize it and cap it with sand. Sounds like you’re going with some serious planting. Looking forward to see this come to life.

Oh hell no. I have no experience with plants at all. I want to do two large Amazon’s like yours. Each to be in front of the hmf corner filters to mask them. Then want to a tree trunk in the middle of the tank. Final touches was thinking of some tall background plants and maybe like dwarf grass. I want as little maintenance as possible.

With a large aimara it will be hard to get my hands in the tank so I really want something I can set and leave. Same thing with substrate. Whatever I do I need to be willing to live with it regardless of whether the plants are successful or not.

Soil comes with a lot of cost/downsides. Amazon swords are easy enough that you can use straight PFS with root tabs or you can use PFS throughout your tank and use shallow pots with soil for the swords.

I have to research. I think dwarf grass and other carpeting plants need more than PFS. The other background plant I wanted I think was anibias which is a thin tall plant.

My challenge with PFS is I’ll probably have around 9,000 to 10,000 gph which will blow it around
