Yeah you never know...you may end up with a senegal that hides under a rock 24/7 and a del that is constantly cruising. but before i picked these guys up i was constantly told that pollis were the most active polli other than sens and so far that has proven to be true.

Hey Rocksor

Yeah right filters won't render water changes obsolete but a bigger filter still means that your overall water quality is better and will stay better for a longer time. However, since this isn't my only tank and I am now restocking it and not starting completely new, I am already on a weekly water change schedule (with the occasional two week waterchange if on holidays or some stuff like that). I also already had some bichirs from a friend for a couple of months about a year ago since his tank cracked and he couldn't get a new one fast enough. Had no issues there with 1 senegal, 1 delhezi and 2 ornats (all being 20cm+), obviously the ornats couldn't have stayed in there for much longer but had no water quality issues there - this while being on a much smaller filter than now (about 3 times smaller- and yes I know, it's not all about the size ;) ) I was feeding the every other day with frozen fish and they seemed happy and grew nicely.

I don't wanna sound like I wouldn't care about the inputs you give me, it's just what I experienced worked fine for a few months, that's why I am a little "let down" by the fact that you suggest only getting one of each kind.
I didn't realize that you've already had experience with the bichirs or fishkeeping in general. I always advise with slight understocking for folks that I think maybe new.

So you no longer have the active del?

Well my bad for not stating that, how could you have known that ;) and it's always better to understock if you are new, that's true.

Well the delhezi is still doing great but back at my friends place since he got his aquarium fixed (some workers broke the aquarium while doing some plumbing in his flat while he was off to work, he had to rush back and get his arowana amd big plecos and stuff to a temporary place and gave me the bichirs sind i had my 350L empty and his other friend was already overstocked with his arowana and stuff). But I then gave them back to him and got the stocking that I originally wanted (had some freshwater archer fish in there sinca almost a year now) but I have to give the archers away now since the person that looked after them during my military service ended up creating crickettown in our flat instead of the aquarium... which my family didn't particulary like haha ;) so I was now told to either get rid of the archers or het rid of all fish completely... and that's why I had the idea to get bichirs since I always loved looking at them and just have 4 bushfishes from the old stock that i would keep.

So tl;dr: What would you now advice me to get? would 2 of each and 5 leos be alright?

yeah I guess I just got to gamble and see what my lfs can actually get me and then hope for the best. But I mean as I said, I'm fine with having less action in this one than in my other aquarium, the malawis over there are certainly creating enough action by constantly knocking over rocks and chasing themselves haha

My .02 cents.
1 polli
1 Sen
1 albino sen
1 del.
3 ctenopomas
Some kind of dithers maybe...congo tetra 6ish?
Yeah i thought about mixing normal and albino sens anyway, my girlfriend loves albinos in general haha. congo tetra seem to be either hit or miss it seems, some say it worked perfectly, others say won't work at all... That's why I thought I might just stick with the ctenopomas as pretty much everyone says this works fine. Have you got any experience with congos and bichirs?
And thanks, it's nice being here and I already got much more support than I thought, much appreciated!

Basic rule for poly keeping is either keep 1 or 3 or more, dont do two cause one will dominate the other imo.
I am for sure with you on keeping polys in groups and not as single specimen. What I am still unsure is whether they actually need multiple of the same specimen or if just in general multiple polys do the trick aswell. The 4 that i "babysitted" for my friend got along great even though the ornis where nearly twice as fat as the senegal/delhezi. They were always hanging out together. But I guess then it would rather be one delhezi/polli and 3 senegals?
