Awesome looking fish! I've got a regular colored one that I picked up at my lfs at about two inches. Looks to be about the same exact size and build of yours. Still olive green with the black stripe, just starting to get the first hints of whitish blue bleeding into the fins. Not really sure if its Male or female. Luckily mine has taken all manner of pellet food from the start. Can't wait to see this thread continue over time, and how their colors develop! Super interesting to see how oddball color variants of fish develop differently!

These are gonna look amazing, forget that guy slating your fish. I bet he will change his mind when yours is 24" and bright red while the blue on his has faded away and he has a massive brown fish.

Ok so they are about the exact same size as mine. After looking at some other threads on here I'm leaning towards mine being a female. Slight specking showing on the gill plates and barely noticable whitish blue coming in on the fins. My red tiger mota is starting to color up nicely already at only 2 inches so it may be female as well. Showing pretty good reds already.

Update: I just ordered some Amitlania Sp. Cabuya from Jeff Rapps. I am going to try to grow these out and keep them as a tank mate to act as a dither, and also possibly provide a source of live food with fry for my Dovii. I talked to Mauricio, who is the guy who caught the first red dovii and the parents of mine. He said these fish were caught very close to where the Cabuya are found. So working on kind of a red dovii CR biotope.
