I have also had difficulty getting my older Jack Dempseys to eat pellets. My larger fry are starting to eat NLS Probiotix. They are still getting baby brine shrimp, but they are getting big enough to start getting the flakes and pellets mixed in. I will keep feeding these the Probiotix as I grow them out.

I've had my EBJD for a few months now and these guys are extremely touch and go. At the .5 Inch size I've literally had to bring him back from the dead twice already. Once because my heater malfunctioned and I was not aware of it because I was not able to pick up on it immediately because he is not in an acrylic or glass aquarium Hes in a Pond so I am not able to see much of anything and another simply because he did not like the tankmates I chose for him.. This is a very very sensitive little fish so my advice like stated earlier is to keep the water absolutely perfect, I give mine Colbolt Spirulina flakes and I also give him Frozen Daphnia 2x a week his water stays at 82 and I have since installed a Finnex digital controller to work alongside with my Heater to maintain absolute perfect temperature. The only tankmates he has now is a large school of Giant danios which he enjoys coexisting with from what I can see These are my experiences with this fish

I thought I would put in a cleaning crew with my Jack Dempseys. I have bristlenose and zebra loaches with them. I have not had any issues with them. The Dempseys seem to target other Dempseys more than my cleaners. Not what you want in there if planning to spawn and raise fry in the same tank. If there is a spawn in there that I want to raise fry from, I have learned the hard way to get the eggs out as soon as possible.

Any of those other fish would happily eat the eggs. Once I came home from work and saw that a new pair had spawned. I figured I would pull the eggs out after I did a water change on one of my other tanks. I dropped some food into the tank and the pair came to eat. I went in the other room for less that 5 minutes. I came out just in time to see my pleco swimming out of their “cave” and every single egg was gone. On the other hand, I have a tank in my office with one of my older pairs in along with two large adult bristlenose plecos. They are agressive and diligent enough not to let the plecos near the eggs. So it is up to you and what your end goal is.

i feel like the pleco is my biggest concern because the pictus and loach mind there own but my pleco goes everywhere, i may move him on the first sight of eggs

The eggs are on the slate below the female. This spawn should help me determine the genes this female carries. I expect to have all four color morphs of Jack Dempseys in this spawn.

On Saturday I placed this male and female into a small tank with a divider between the two with the hopes of not having anymore spawning for a while. When I got home tonight, I found that the female had somehow gotten herself into the side with the male. It is interesting to me how at times I can’t get certain fish to spawn and then you get others that pop out eggs like crazy. I currently have three females and three males that seem to think their duty is to repopulate the world with Jack Dempseys.
