On Saturday I placed this male and female into a small tank with a divider between the two with the hopes of not having anymore spawning for a while. When I got home tonight, I found that the female had somehow gotten herself into the side with the male. It is interesting to me how at times I can’t get certain fish to spawn and then you get others that pop out eggs like crazy. I currently have three females and three males that seem to think their duty is to repopulate the world with Jack Dempseys.

Are these pink JDs?

If so are they sexes similar to regular JDs? Meaning the blue beard means female?

Yes these are gold/pink Jack Dempseys. I had a little trouble telling male from female at first, but all of the sudden the blue appeared on the females’ gill plates just like a regular color female. If you look carefully at the fish that is outside the flowerpot in the corner, you can see the blue. I know that the female caries the blue gene (she has had electric blue fry with a different male) and I expect that the male does as well. If they both carry the recessive blue gene, there should be platinums in this spawn.

Just to clarify, the adult fish in the picture above are gold Jack Dempseys that are supposed to carry the recessive blue gene. Their fry should have a percentage of platinum colored fish in the mix. Platinum is a fish that has both the gold genes and the electric blue genes at the same time. I do not have any to post a picture of yet. I hope some of their fry will platinum.

Would Platinums tend to be genetically weak like a lot of EBJD are when you breed EB to EB? I've never looked into platinums before so if someone could educate me that would be great!
