No, and uh.....No.....

He's not one to send one of his animals that he's had for years to a "facility", just to watch them kill her off......He's got the experience and the know how to do it himself, just no Male to do it with......

Once an animal gets in private hands, they aren't considered Zoo worthy anymore.......Afterall, why pay to see it when you can go somewhere else and see it for free? How many Lacies do you see in Zoos?
Yea I can perfectly understand and relate to that, it sucks.

The Philly Zoo for one...
You seem to have some issue with the AZA, care to elaborate? Is this from opinion, hear say or professional experience?

Truer words have rarely been spoken, EricIvins. I think it is because the private citizen has a vested financial interest in breeding success when the zoo does not, and I often think the keepers are caught in the middle of what they could do and what they are allowed to do.

On a second note, I loved the Perentie stuff but Austin Stevens is a complete d____ bag! The only thing worse than his total lack of herp knowledge is his overwhelming urge to share his ignorance.

I agree with everything here. I believe that "conservation through commercialization" is a great idea and is under utilized. As for Austin Stevens, I used to idolize him until I got myself a few books and learned just how much that guy didn't know and how feeble some of his stunts are.

I'd really like to believe in it but there are too many flaws that I can think of about it.
Chiefly:
-The detrimental impact collecting for the pet trade has on wild populations

-Gene flow effects from genetic bottlenecks and founder effects effectively changing the ability of a captive population to respond to change

-The lack of organization (where are the stud books and who has what)

-The fact that not all individuals with rare species will be willing to give them up for restocking efforts in native habitats

-The lack of a controlling body that can facilitate effective partnerships with other conservation organizations (such as the AZA)

1 - Prove the "Pet Trade" has detrimental impacts on any population.......Habitat destruction and the Food/Medicinal Trade trump that by far.......

2 - Captive populations don't have to respond to change - That's why they're in captivity......

3 - You really think the AZA is organized?

4 - Re-stocking efforts? They're in captivity........Nothing in captivity should be Re-released........There is a reason why the animals were extirpated, and that situation usually doesn't get better.......And nothing like releasing captive pathogens into relic populations, giving them no chance what so ever........

5 - Again, you really think the AZA is organized? Let alone facilitate effective partnerships? Go behind the scenes......The AZA is only facilitated by a few dedicated Zoo keepers, not this great organization like you think........The hard work done by a few, shouldn't be accepted as work done by an "Organization" of many.......

The Private sector is competition and therefore will never be accepted by the AZA.......Even though the Private sector has done more for Reptiles than AZA endorsed institutions combined.......

I actually kept track of one of the AZA's studbooks for a few months. It is not as organized as you think and the species survival plans that they have in place are no better than a feeble attempt at preventing crossbreeding and I have seen multiple large scale breeders in the private pet industry keep far more specific and accurate records. The SSP's are run by a few zoo keepers that volunteer the job and even fewer people that overlook these volunteers. There is absolutely no way that this handful of people can keep up with the mountains of paperwork that are required to do the tasks they claim to do.

Dont think that you will ever see these in private collections, all reptiles have to be captive bred from aus. You might see lace monitors in the private world because they are very common in aus. These are not even common in zoos like the komodo dragons are. Great monitor 3 largest by weight, they get as big as waters with out the body mass and not as long as a croc monitor.
You can find them from time to time for sale usually for $1000 + .....& in California you can find lace monitors for sale in some reptile stores for around the same price!
