Largest tetra for dither

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks I really like the BA the way they look and agressibly feed.

Thinking I might get 10 Colombian BA and red eye and let Darwin pick the winners.

Will they all school together?

Do you mean SA lampeye tetras (moenkhausia) or african arnoldicthys red eyes?

If lampeyes, you should consider growing them out to max size before mixing with mid sized cichlids. They do get to a healthy size but it takes a while, I think a big GT would still dine on them full grown though. The lampeyes I've had seem to join in with other schooling fish when the opportunity presents itself.

I have no experience keeping arnoldichthys but I've always suspected they would be a poor choice for a dither due to their more slender build, seem like an obvious target for predation. They get about the same size and build as giant danio but are much more expensive ime.

My guess, Buenos Aires.
I currently have Colombians and love them (they are gorgeous and are endemic to my country!), but they max out at a slightly smaller size than Buenos Aires (I believe). A photo below just for kicks.
If by red eye tetra, Moenkhausia sanctafilomenae is meant, then I don't believe they are as good a choice as either Buenos Aires or Colombians (or the Triphortheus mentioned above!), although they are gorgeous! They are meeker (more gentle) and slower than either of the others, which is not a good trait when placed with cichlids or other aggressive busters. They like to hover a lot, with little of spurts of velocity. The others also hover (not the Triportheus) but then, they are really fast and better assured of themselves.

They likely would all work together. Most tetras of similar size and aggression seem to play nice.

Beautiful - they look like wimple piranhas!
Are these the guys sometimes called “silver dollar tetras?”

Possible. They have many pseudonyms. It could be you're referring to the "discus tetra" , Brachychalcinus, which is a similar looking fish and even more rare ime.

That’s probably the one I was thinking of. Just looked up a picture and it looks a lot like a silver.

yeah I was referring too moenkhausia

put in 11 colombian I have had for a year I really like and so far no issues at all they are large and the GT is still small. have 8 BA in with a small convict in a 30g want to grow out a little before I introduce them, must say the BA are awesome! just picked up 9 red eye from lfs on sale was so excited to see they had what I was looking for in stock and on sale overlooked how small they were. I have them in a 10 to grow out. once they outgrow the 10 they will go with the convict and the BA will go in with the colombian and GT.

really appreciate all the great info.

Think you would like BA tetras. They are beautiful and would be big enough. In a tank like that you could do a large school which is nice to watch. I have a 150g too and 8 of them. Think more might be better. The funny thing is they do well w/ the astyanax bimculatus. They get chased but are too fast for the larger tetras. Some pics to show the size difference. One more thing about bimculatus is that they are more widely spread in SA. These only go as far north as Panama I believe. A close up of their teeth.
