The Voyager 1 space probe, launched on 5th Sept 1977, had a mission to explore the outer solar system, taking photos of the various planets along the way.
It is now well out of the solar system at a distance of about 23 billion kilometers from earth. It continues to travel through the vast expanse of space at about 61'000 kilometers per hour.
If it keeps travelling at that speed, then in about 17'700 years it would reach a distance of ONE light year from earth! (a light year is roughly 9.46 trillion kilometers).
Take into consideration the next nearest star to us, after our sun, is Proxima Centauri, which is about 4.24 light years from earth. As you can see the distances are mindboggling, and that's just to our nearest star.
Our nearest galaxy, Andromeda, is 2.5 million light years away!!! It is the most distant thing visible from earth with the naked eye, yes, you can actually see Andromeda from earth!
