Rate my goldfish tank setup! And what would be the best tank mates?

Another suggestion for you to use for a lid is the clear corrugated plastic sheets that are sold in lumberyards and home improvement places for use in greenhouse construction. A single sheet of this stuff is cheap, it's easily cut with tin snips or heavy shears and it weighs next to nothing. You can easily trim away slots and holes for things like HOB filters, heaters, feeding holes, whatever you want. It looks and feels flimsy, but I have lids made from this stuff that are years old and still good as new.

It has one huge advantage over eggcrate light diffuser material: it cuts evaporation way down. No need to top up water levels every day or two as you likely will be doing with eggcrate, especially during winter when the house is heated and the air is dry.

You could get some nice inexpensive silk plants from the dollar or craft store your goldies would like. Just make sure nothing with glitter/velvet or glue. The long silk vines are good.

But I'll definitely check my local dollar tree and see what they have!

Just a quick update on the goldfish tank. I'll be picking up a 55g within the week! The seller also has 2 other 55g tanks and is willing to sell everything for $100!

So I'll have two other 55g aquariums that I can possibly set up in the future!

The fish will live in the 55 for the next 2 to 3 years. By that time I'll have enough saved up for a 200 or 150g and the goldfish will have the tank they deserve!

I also just tested the 30g they are currently in and I'm happy to say that the tank is ammonia and nitrite free! There is quite a bit of nitrate however. So I'm going to be doing a big water change tonight!

Thanks for all of yalls help! You guys have saved my goldfish. And I wish I knew sooner that my current setup was no good.

Having Monster Fish Keeping disease is a wonderful sickness. Where ever you go, you will see rocks, pieces of wood anything and say, "I wonder what that will look like in my tank?"
And "If I had a bigger tank, I can have bigger fish!"
Then you will be spending all your time on facebook Market Place doing "Aquarium" searches.
If you see an old aquarium someone is throwing out, you will make a quick U-turn and hope you can get back to it before someone else beats you.
Eventually when people see how bad your sickness is, they will have old aquariums that have not been used in years and were put up dirty. When they get rid of clutter they will call you to haul it home.
But be careful, eventually the wife will snap and say "You are not going to put another aquarium in the living room!" But this is good because she may relinquish control of the guest room to you if you move some tanks out of the living room. Then you can build the "Fish Cave" and you will finally be content.... For a short time...

Thanks for the help everyone! Now my goldfish are in a much bigger and nicer tank! The cool thing is that the guy sold my 3 55g tanks with all the supplies for only $100! So eventually all set those up throughout the year.

But here is the thing. I have a cycled 30g 9n my hands, and I was wondering if I could put 2 black moor goldfish in it. Would that work?

Looking great man! Sorry i don't know anything about the black moons but you could easily do a small community tank, maybe some cherry barbs and tetras and a dwarf gourami, and a few cory cats or something like that.

Thanks! I already have a 29g community thank with a moonlight gourami black neon tetras ect. I would normally just do a another community tank but I'm worried the good goldfish bacteria would not work for tropical fish so I'd have to recycle
