I agree with your points, but I strongly criticize how new or young fishkeepers are treated here, especially when they ask questions like those you've mentioned. They are often labeled as 'trolls' or bombarded with criticism from multiple members instead of being welcomed. It feels like some are just waiting for the perfect opportunity to pounce. This kind of behavior is discouraging and can prevent people from seeking advice on fishkeeping forums, and it shouldn't be tolerated.

We must remember that we don’t know where someone learned about fishkeeping or their perspective on what they believe is right, even if it’s wrong. It's important to address these situations with kindness and tolerance.
All in fun...

loosen that top button on the shirt...

not age specific, could be anybody. I'm hardly an 'advanced' keeper myself, so...ain't no thing.

I understand what your saying AR1 but noobs we always say welcome to MFK i think what Fin is saying alot of noobs ask for advise then disregrad the advise we give them.
Last week there was a post a guy was asking a question and ESO and other said it wont work he got all mad at ESO then AR1 was real friendly and tried to help and the guy would only talk to AR1 and not ESO

I don't believe anyone thus far has even mentioned "new" or "young" fish keepers! The replies so far, from what I can see, are just a generalisation of some fish keepers. There's no finger pointing in the direction of any specific age group.

Which comment in particular are you refering to?
Not a single person targeted "new" or "young" fishkeepers in this thread, but the majority of the questions listed by FINWIN FINWIN are usually/mostly asked by "new", "inexperienced" or "young" fishkeepers.

I'm pretty sure in that thread the OP kindly quote " Damn, this is a rude chat. Came here for advice, just like anywhere in the hobby. " then ESO completely starts to bash on him cause he wasn't listening to his advice while AR1 continued helping OP toward an answer.

There's actually cases of long time fishkeepers doing stuff because that's what they know and feel comfy with. One example I can think of is the flowerhorn thing. I really believe people put them in bare tanks because they think they're 'supposed to.' Its a strange idea because they have the same needs as other fish.

At times I felt my ideas/concepts were under fire but I never worried about it too much. We all go from our own experiences. Besides, the joint would be boring if we all agreed. I've actually suggested more people keep fish journals here, not just post specific situations. Keeps it spicy...

You do actually have a point AR1 AR1 .

If you click on any members name you can sometimes see their age, which is great. You can then reply to their post knowing full well how old they are, and tread carefully if they're young. Would this work?

Unfortunately their age is only shown if that particular member has made their age "public" in their settings. Looking at members details in just this thread alone shows that I know the age of some, but not others. So how can you tell if a certain member is old or young if the information is given by some, but not others?

Also, there's nothing to say that a young member doesn't have more knowledge that an older member. Or that an older member may have joined the forum but only just come into the hobby and knows diddly squat.

We're not getting anywhere really are we, lol.

I suppose, and I've actually seen this a lot, that when a new member posts they sometimes say something along the lines of, "newbie here with lots of questions, go easy on me". That would be the ideal solution to prevent all us long in the tooth gnarly old veterans from putting our foot in it, lol.

For what it's worth, I am also a new fishkeeper, and the forum has been nothing but kind and civil with me. Yes, the hobby offers you so much in the way of cool new fish that over-buying is understandable for a beginner, and older keepers won't always be sympathetic because they went through their "buy-everything" phase long ago. But we must not forget that these are living, relatively intelligent animals under our care, not decorations or collectible items. Any criticism is made with the hope of creating a good environment for the fish, and will quickly turn to praise if the recommended changes are made. Speaking of which, I look forward to making that "55g revamped" thread once I'm done with my own stock adjustments!

But if we're talking about stuff we don't get, here's something that has been buggin' my noggin for a while. Why are common plecos still so cheap?

I can understand redtails and iridescent sharks, they are food fish and we get their culls. No one's out there eating plecos. I can understand goldfish, they breed with gusto in any setup you can provide. To breed commons you must build a riverbank for them to dig nests in. I can understand oscars, there's demand for them (even if half of that demand is buffoons putting them in 55gs and feeding them live goldfish). No one buys more than a single common. I can understand livebearers, they've got local breeding operations. No one breeds these where I live, so they must be shipped from elsewhere.

Yet they still cost like $4 apiece here. Who got producing them to such an art form that they still turn a profit?

There's a difference between advice and validation.

Lots of aquarists, new and sometimes not-so-new, claim they are asking for advice...will this work, can I do this safely, what causes this, etc.

But, when they hear...usually from multiple sources...something they don't want to hear, it suddenly becomes obvious that they don't want advice. Instead, they have an idea in mind already. They have formulated a plan or opinion, based upon something they have been told or read or heard or simply imagined and wished for, and they want someone to validate it. They want to hear...what they want to hear. If someone then tells them something they don't want to hear, they get all pantsy. Or is that shortsy? Oh, yeah...shirty. That's it; they get all shirty.

And, yeah, it's probably the older crowd who lacks the patience to deal with the tantrums and pouting. If you want to hear the opinions of others, then be prepared to hear some that don't line up with yours. If you just want someone to say "Oh, yes, indeed, that will be fine!"...then you aren't asking for anything other than platitudes and validation.
