Bigger filter than the FX6

I was finally able to finally remove my last Fx6 last year and I couldn’t be happier. I hate having to clean them as it’s simply a pain in the ass. All my display tanks which are three 240g’s and a 90g are all run on large sumps and I couldn’t be happier. Having every thing open makes maintenance exponentially easier so sumps would get my vote.

I got all mine from my local fish store, but I recently learned about this online seller “Jonah’s aquarium” who sells native fish and seem pretty decently priced! The wood is all from logs around the house and the prop, anchor (which you can’t really see) and the minnow bucket are all random things my husband had laying around
I ran a BioForce 2000 Pond Filter on a 300 Gal Rubbermaid for about a decade, that was over a decade ago...
It had a backwash feature but I didn't use it...
I ran it through a prefilter that was changed/cleared "regularly". I had shut off valves on both hoses and wheeled it outside on a dolly once a year or so and cleaned it in the yard.
I was very happy with it.

For a few years I've been building my own canisters from commerical chemical drums, 8 & 15 gallons though I've got an eye out for the right kind of 35 or 55gal. "Normal" canisters of cleanable filter-foam have been an 8gal HDPE chem drum with the deep seating lid & steel clamp, with a home-made O-ring. The tank stays clean & the huge foam volume means I (need to) clean it maybe twice/yr. Pump is a med-small Jaebo inside the drum. If so, get used to using epoxy & 5200 sealant-adhesive, and to make minor repairs every year & major every 3yrs including replacing the O-ring (not hard if you can find the material). The tank is a 230 long & tall embedded in a concrete "show" wall.
The others are tall 15gal clear/white HDPE chem drums with 3/4 & 1.5" threaded fittings in the top; rather than cut the drum, I've just filled it with course-crushed bamboo charcoal + clams, snails, FW sponge(?) etc. for an all-biological filtration which leaves the tanks chemically pristine but with particulates... which is kind'a ugly but any baby-fish love it. Snails in the main tank would help/work, but for loaches, sleeper gobies & BGKs. The same cheap Jaebo pump hidden in the tank on the downstream side (of the filter). After 3yrs I've not cleaned the drum & it's not filing with muck, though that'll eventually have to happen. Meanshile I vac the major muck accumulations on the tank-side. That system is on a 6' 100gal "show"; I'm passively looking to swap-out to a 55gal drum and add a smaller secondary system with foam for those particulates, though I'm also thinking the 55 will be able to hold them.
