Looking to stock a 125g community around a Green Terror. Currently have a 3.5" GT and 1" Honduran Red Point (Female). I was thinking of also adding a Jack Dempsey and Texas. Would 3-4 firemouth and some sort of pleco/cat also work?

Any suggestions to build around the GT I already have would be appreciated.

Attached is a pic of the tank being filled. I still need to add sand and rock work to accent the driftwood.

Green Terrors are usually flexible when it comes to tank mates. However, it depends on the individual temperament. Sometimes you have very gentile, accepting GT's, other times you have angry brutes. To generally answer your question, a Jack Dempsey would be a good addition, 3-4 firemouth's would also work, and a Texas could work. I would add some more decor to allow small territory forming because Green Terrors will generally roam all over the aquarium and you'll want the other tank mates to have places to hide. If you had 1 Green Terror, 1 Texas, 1 Jack Dempsey, a small/medium Catfish and a small school of dithers, I think that would complete a 125.

Firemouths generally like to hide which can frustrate other Cichlids that like caves, so this can be a problem if you don't have enough decor. Another combo that is likely to work would be 1 Green Terror, 1 Jack Dempsey, 3-4 Firemouths and a small/medium Catfish.

You can look into other Cichlids: Severums, Uaru, Convicts, Oscars.. Or try a more aggressive Cichlid (Red Devil, Salvini, Managuense, Festae, Mayan, Cuban etc...)

You can also look into other fish: Bichirs, Loaches, Eels, Barbs etc...

Didn't know that about Firemouths, not looking for a a fish that will hide all day. I'm actually rethinking the JD, it seems as they get older they just sit around.

What would make good dithers besides silver dollars? That are still Central/ South American.

I'll try to pass by a few LFSs today and see what they have in stock.

For Dithers it will depend as Green Terrors will differ in their tolerance. It may depend on whether you feed it live food (feeder fish) and may also depend on what else you decide to put the GT with. Ideally, consider the entire stock to go with the GT first, then try to introduce the Dithers and Cichlids together within the same timeframe (Month or two).

There are a lot of different combinations that may work, just have to try things out.

I keep mine with a female Festae. Both are approx 8". Temperament so far is decent and there are a few other Cichlids and misc fish in there. I am currently using a few African Cichlids as dithers, but I am going to remove them as the GT and Festae continue to grow. My target fish are a Flagtail Prochilodus and a Climbing Perch Fish. I also have a large-ish Ornate Bichir. So hopefully, I will end up with the GT, Festae, Prochilodus, Climbing Perch and the Ornate for my 135G.

It's difficult to recommend a particular species because you will have your own preferences and outcome, but personally, I really like the Female Festae. For me, the colors are unbeatable and keeping her with the GT really make great color contrast.

Anyway, keep me updated. Let me know what you decide.

I'm thinking I might do a GT, Texas, 2 Severums (Super Red or Rokteil), and a HRP. I wouldn't mind a bumblee oscar in this setup, but I think it might be too much of a bio load in a 125g.

I wonder if 2-3 pictus cats would work with this setup. I'd like some sort of ground activity.

Personally I have 3 green terrors (4",6",10") housed with 3 silver dollars and a 4 inch jaguar the aggression is spread out pretty evenly between the green terrors, the jaguar kind of sits at the top waiting for food, so maybe you could even try adding a few more gts, through my years of keeping them I've noticed that they tend to be more aggressive towards their own species versus other species. Adding a few other green terrors might even work as a "dither" in itself
On regards of the bio load, I think adding an Oscar would be a bit too much, really messy fish and grow very fast.
You should look into a Raphael cat, really robust but won't give you much ground activity, also not sure if they have a big bio load
Let us know what you decide to do

What's the consensus on this stocking? I'm looking for an active/interactive/wow factor for this tank as its in the middle of the living room.

Would really like:
1 Bumble Bee Oscar
1 GT
1 Carpintis Escondido Texas

To round off stocking:
2 Sajica "T Bar Cichlid" Pair or other smaller cichlid/catfish

And just to throw in a update pic, finally added the pool filter sand.

Looking to add some large river stones and tie some anubias to the driftwood. Hoping the anubias will last a bit.

i would skip the sajica, and stick to the 3 that you want. With the 3 you are already pushing the stocking limits.

For a wow factor, what about male GT with 6-7 pictus, and 8-10 buenos aires tetras? You wouldnt have to worry about cichlid on cichlid aggression and play musical tanks if aggression doesnt work out among the 3 cichlids.
